Roadside bomb kills 16 Afghans, including 11 kids (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A station wagon packed with Afghan civilians struck a roadside bomb in western Afghanistan, triggering an explosion that killed 16 people, 11 of them children, Afghan officials said.

The vehicle was traveling in Herat province's Shindand district when it hit the bomb, said Mohammad Salim, the police garrison chief for the district. Another four people in the car were wounded, he said.

Those in the car were part of the same extended family, Salim said. He did not provide further details. Provincial spokesman Muhiuddin Noori confirmed the casualty figures.

Civilians have been the overwhelming victims of the rise in violence in Afghanistan this year. Though civilian deaths attributed to NATO forces have decreased, a rise in roadside bombs and insurgent attacks means that more civilians are being killed.

Meanwhile, more details emerged about this week's killing of an American CIA employee in Kabul. A U.S. Embassy spokesman said that the dead worker was a facility maintenance employee.

"He provided essential support for the maintenance of the U.S. annex in Kabul," Gavin Sundwall said. "He was described to me as a valued member of the team and he will be sorely missed." U.S. officials have not named the complex as a CIA office, but former intelligence officials have confirmed that it was used by the CIA.

The American was shot dead Sunday evening by an Afghan worker at the building. Sundwall said previous reports that the Afghan worker was not authorized to carry a weapon inside the complex were premature, and that it was unclear whether that was the case.

A U.S. official in Washington said the Afghan attacker was providing security to the CIA office and that the American who died was working as a contractor for the CIA. The official requested anonymity because he was speaking about intelligence matters.

In the south on Tuesday, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-packed vehicle into a police truck, killing two civilians.

The attacker in the southern city of Lashkar Gah, the main city in Helmand province, apparently was waiting in the car at the gates of the police headquarters just outside a bakery where officers regularly buy bread in the morning, said the deputy provincial police chief, Kamaluddin Sherzai. The bomber then slammed into a police truck that was parked at the shop, triggering the bomb, he said.

Two civilians ? one man and one young boy ? were killed in the blast, said provincial government spokesman Daoud Ahmadi. Another 26 people were wounded, including 10 police officers and six children, he said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the Lashkar Gah attack.

Hours earlier, the Taliban released a formal statement rejecting claims that the insurgency has become splintered or that the group or any of their allies have ties to the Pakistani government.

The statement said the Taliban insurgency "is at its strongest and unified more than it has been at any other stage," and denied that the movement has bases in Pakistan.

The claim runs contrary to U.S. and international assertions that the Taliban retain numerous safe havens and bases in Pakistan's tribal areas, used to stage attacks into neighboring Afghanistan.

The Taliban also reject U.S. charges that the Haqqani network, a key affiliate, has ties to Pakistan's intelligence service. The group says Haqqani network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani is a key member of the Taliban leadership.

The Taliban statement appeared to be an attempt to give the Pakistani government some breathing room as Islamabad comes under increasing pressure to take action against insurgents within its borders.

In the wake of three major attacks in the Afghan capital in the past two weeks, U.S. officials have ramped up their public comments alleging the Pakistani government backs the Haqqani network, which is believed to be behind a number of attacks in and around Kabul. The Afghan government, meanwhile, has upped its protests against cross-border artillery attacks it blames on Pakistan.

On Monday, the Afghan government said that Afghan-Pakistani relations will suffer if the attacks in eastern Afghanistan continue.

A NATO forces spokesman in Afghanistan said Monday that the Haqqani network is still very much operating out of Pakistan.

"We have no credible intelligence indicating that the Haqqani network has eliminated their operating safe havens in Pakistan," said Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson. "They continue to plan and execute operations from across the border."

In Kabul, meanwhile, tensions between different political factions were on the rise as hundreds of demonstrators, led by former intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh, accused the government of mishandling the investigation into last week's killing of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Saleh called on international officials to investigate the assassination, saying he did not trust the Afghan government to do the work honestly.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? State Department officials could get an earful from critics in two states Monday over the agency's report concluding there are unlikely to be any serious environmental problems with a proposed oil pipeline stretching from Canada to the Texas coast.

The department kicks off this week's series of hearings on the Keystone XL pipeline with meetings Monday in Topeka, Kan., and Port Arthur, Texas. Officials may give a brief statement but don't plan to answer any questions, reserving most of the time for comments from the public ? including environmentalists who argue the pipeline would be a source of "dirty oil."

"We see these as listening sessions," said Kerri-Ann Jones, assistant secretary for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, a State Department agency. "We want to listen and hear what people have to say."

Other meetings have been scheduled this week in Montana, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Even in that deeply conservative state there is growing concern about the pipeline's effect on the Ogallala Aquifer, a vast subterranean reservoir that spans a large swath of the Great Plains and provides water to much of Nebraska and seven other states.

The State Department, which has to approve the 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline because it would cross the U.S.-Canada border, is expected to decide by the end of the year. The sessions are likely to focus on the department's final draft of its environmental impact statement on the pipeline, which found that special conditions put on the pipeline would result in a project with a "degree of safety greater than any typically constructed domestic oil pipeline system under current regulations."

The department said on its website that participants at the meetings are encouraged to talk about whether they think the pipeline is in the U.S. national interest. The department also says that its decision on Calgary-based TransCanada's application for the pipeline permit will take into account several factors, including "environmental, economic, energy security, foreign policy, and pipeline safety concerns."

The proposed $7 billion pipeline, which would move tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, would hook up to TransCanada's existing pipelines and move oil to Oklahoma and the Gulf of Mexico.

Keystone XL has drawn criticism from some who say tar sands oil requires huge amounts of energy to extract and that a spill along the pipeline could cause an environmental disaster.

TransCanada and its supporters say the pipeline would mean tens of thousands of U.S. jobs and more energy security for the country.

"If the activists feel that they're facing an uphill battle, it's because the facts don't support their overheated rhetoric," TransCanada spokesman Shawn Howard said. "It has been shown that the outrageous claims these groups have made aren't true."

Sezmi's cable / satellite alternative TV service to shut down Monday, won't be missed

It's been almost two years since Sezmi launched its hybrid antenna and internet TV service, and now it has announced the dream of pay-TV without cable or satellite is dead. An email went out to customers tonight informing them the ability to view or record programming on their Sezmi systems would be shut off Monday, September 26th. The only compensation given for the sudden disconnect? Free access to the VOD catalog before that disappears too, on November 1st. The $20 / month Select Plus package that offered pay-TV channels over antenna never spread beyond Los Angeles, although users happy to settle for basic channels and online VOD had access in other markets. Still, we predict it won't be missed simply because it doesn't seem like many people ever signed up. Despite nice features like unique profiles for different household members, the limited sports selection cut off many early adopters from the beginning. The company is apparently trying to pivot into selling its technology to other service providers, we'll wait and see if a Moxi-like resurgence is in the cards. Check out the letter to subscribers and our original video demo after the break while we plan a month-long memorial service for those soon-to-be-useless 1TB DVRs.

A doctor may remove the cancer using one of the following types of surgery:

Local excision Resection Resection and colostomy.

If the rectal cancer is found at a very early stage, the doctor may remove it without cutting into the abdomen. If the cancer is found in a polyp (a growth that protrudes from the rectal mucous membrane), the operation is called a polypectomy.

If the cancer is larger, the doctor will perform a resection of the rectum removing the cancer and a small amount of healthy tissue around it. Baby showers are a great time to get together with friends and celebrate the upcoming birth and all the excitement that goes with that.

When the appropriate time comes, you will probably be approached by at least one friend about a baby shower. This may be your best friend from high school or the girlfriend you ran around with while still single. You may even be approached by relatives who want to throw a shower for you. Some people have multiple baby showers - one thrown by family members, one thrown by friends and one thrown by coworkers. No matter who throws the shower for you, you will need to think about whom to put on the guest list. Chances are, your aunt, best friend or coworker are not going to know everyone you would like to invite, so she is going to need a little help from you.

First, you will need to decide if you think you are going to have more than one shower. If you hear rumors of a family shower, you probably do not want to invite family members to your "friends" shower. If you have coworkers that are also close friends, you do not want to invite them to your "friends" shower only to find out you are having a work related shower as well. So keep your ears open to try to find out as much as possible to avoid duplicate invitations. You can even ask people you are close to if you feel comfortable enough and explain to them why you are asking. Angel Food Ministries shutting down, cites economy (AP)

ATLANTA ? Angel Food Ministries is going out of business after 17 years of providing discounted groceries to needy families across the country, citing the economic downturn affecting many customers.

The multi-million dollar food nonprofit says it will cease operations immediately, according to a statement provided to The Associated Press.

Angel Food was started in 1994 by pastors Joe and Linda Wingo with 34 families in Monroe, Ga. At its height, the organization grew through a network of churches to feed more than 500,000 families a month in 45 states. The organization ran into trouble in 2009 when the FBI searched its offices. The Wingos and one of their sons were on staff.

Joe Wingo's reported salary in 2009 was more than $694,000.
