Birdsong study pecks theory that music is uniquely human

Dec. 27, 2012 ? A bird listening to birdsong may experience some of the same emotions as a human listening to music, suggests a new study on white-throated sparrows, published in Frontiers of Evolutionary Neuroscience.

"We found that the same neural reward system is activated in female birds in the breeding state that are listening to male birdsong, and in people listening to music that they like," says Sarah Earp, who led the research as an undergraduate at Emory University.

For male birds listening to another male's song, it was a different story: They had an amygdala response that looks similar to that of people when they hear discordant, unpleasant music.

The study, co-authored by Emory neuroscientist Donna Maney, is the first to compare neural responses of listeners in the long-standing debate over whether birdsong is music.

"Scientists since the time of Darwin have wondered whether birdsong and music may serve similar purposes, or have the same evolutionary precursors," Earp notes. "But most attempts to compare the two have focused on the qualities of the sound themselves, such as melody and rhythm."

Earp's curiosity was sparked while an honors student at Emory, majoring in both neuroscience and music. She took "The Musical Brain" course developed by Paul Lennard, director of Emory's Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology program, which brought in guest lecturers from the fields of neuroscience and music.

"During one class, the guest speaker was a composer and he said that he thought that birdsong is like music, but Dr. Lennard thought it was not," Earp recalls. "It turned into this huge debate, and each of them seemed to define music differently. I thought it was interesting that you could take one question and have two conflicting answers that are both right, in a way, depending on your perspective and how you approach the question."

As a senior last year, Earp received a grant from the Scholars Program for Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Research (SPINR), and a position in the lab of Maney, who uses songbirds as a model to study the neural basis of complex learned behavior.

When Earp proposed using the lab's data to investigate the birdsong-music debate, Maney thought it was a great idea. "Birdsong is a signal," Maney says. "And the definition of a signal is that it elicits a response in the receiver. Previous studies hadn't approached the question from that angle, and it's an important one."

Earp reviewed studies that mapped human neural responses to music through brain imaging.

She also analyzed data from the Maney lab on white-throated sparrows. The lab maps brain responses in the birds by measuring Egr-1, part of a major biochemical pathway activated in cells that are responding to a stimulus.

The study used Egr-1 as a marker to map and quantify neural responses in the mesolimbic reward system in male and female white-throated sparrows listening to a male bird's song. Some of the listening birds had been treated with hormones, to push them into the breeding state, while the control group had low levels of estradiol and testosterone.

During the non-breeding season, both sexes of sparrows use song to establish and maintain dominance in relationships. During the breeding season, however, a male singing to a female is almost certainly courting her, while a male singing to another male is challenging an interloper.

For the females in the breeding state every region of the mesolimbic reward pathway that has been reported to respond to music in humans, and that has a clear avian counterpart, responded to the male birdsong. Females in the non-breeding state, however, did not show a heightened response.

And the testosterone-treated males listening to another male sing showed an amygdala response, which may correlate to the amygdala response typical of humans listening to the kind of music used in the scary scenes of horror movies.

"The neural response to birdsong appears to depend on social context, which can be the case with humans as well," Earp says. "Both birdsong and music elicit responses not only in brain regions associated directly with reward, but also in interconnected regions that are thought to regulate emotion. That suggests that they both may activate evolutionarily ancient mechanisms that are necessary for reproduction and survival."

A major limitation of the study, Earp adds, is that many of the regions that respond to music in humans are cortical, and they do not have clear counterparts in birds. "Perhaps techniques will someday be developed to image neural responses in baleen whales, whose songs are both musical and learned, and whose brain anatomy is more easily compared with humans," she says.

Earp, who played the viola in the Emory orchestra and graduated last May, is now a medical student at the Cleveland Clinic.

So what music makes her brain light up? "Stravinsky's 'Firebird' suite," Earp says.

At Christmas Eve Mass, pope urges space for God

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI marked Christmas Eve with Mass in St. Peter's Basilica and a pressing question: Will people find room in their hectic, technology-driven lives for children, the poor and God?

The pontiff also prayed that Israelis and Palestinians live in peace and freedom, and asked the faithful to pray for strife-torn Syria as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

The ceremony began at 10 p.m. local time Monday with the blare of trumpets, meant to symbolize Christian joy over the news of Christ's birth in Bethlehem. As midnight neared, chuch bells tolled throughout Rome, while inside the basilica, the sweet voices of the Vatican's boys' choir resounded joyously.

Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican traditionally began at midnight, but the start time was moved up years ago so as to give the 85-year-old pontiff more time to rest before his Christmas Day speech. That address is to be delivered at midday Tuesday from the basilica's central balcony.

A smiling Benedict, dressed in gold-colored vestments, waved to photo-snapping pilgrims and applauding church-goers as he glided up the center aisle toward the ornate main altar of the cavernous basilica on a wheeled platform guided by white-gloved aides. The platform saves him energy.

In his homily, Benedict cited the Gospel account of Mary and Joseph finding no room at an inn and ending up in a stable which sheltered the baby Jesus. He urged people to reflect upon what they find time for in their busy, technology-driven lives.

"The great moral question of our attitude toward the homeless, toward refugees and migrants takes on a deeper dimension: Do we really have room for God when he seeks to enter under our roof? Do we have time and space for him?" the pope said.

"The faster we can move, the more efficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent," Benedict lamented.

The pope worried that "we are so 'full' of ourselves that there is no room left for God." He added, "that means there is no room for others either ? for children, for the poor, for the stranger."

With his voice a bit hoarse, and looking somewhat tired as the two-hour ceremony neared its end, Benedict decried that history has suffered through "misuse of religion," when belief in one God became a pretext for intolerance and violence. Still, he insisted that where God is "forgotten or even denied, there is no peace either."

"Let us pray that Israelis and Palestinians be able to live their lives in the peace of the one God and in freedom," the pope said.

Benedict also mentioned his hope for progress in Syria, which is mired in civil war, as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

Reflecting the Vatican's concern about the exodus of many fearful Christians from the Muslim-dominated Middle East, Benedict expressed hope that "Christians in those lands where our faith was born maybe be able to continue living there" and that Christians and Muslims "build up their countries side by side in God's peace."

Hours before the basilica Mass, Benedict lit a Christmas peace candle on the windowsill of his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Firemen's killer left chilling note, deaths at 3

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? An ex-con killed two firefighters with the same caliber and make military-style rifle used in the Connecticut school massacre after typing a note pledging to burn down his neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people," police said Tuesday as another body, believed to be the gunman's missing sister, was found.

William Spengler, 62, who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother, set his house afire before dawn Christmas Eve before taking a revolver, a shotgun and a semiautomatic rifle to a sniper position outside, Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

The death toll rose to three as police revealed that a body believed to be the killer's 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, was found in his fire-ravaged home.

Authorities say he sprayed bullets at the first responders, killing two firefighters and injuring two others who remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition, awake and alert and expected to survive. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario.

Police recovered a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26, including 20 young children, Pickering said.

The chief said it was believed the firefighters were hit with shots from the rifle given the distance but the investigation was incomplete.

"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," the chief said.

The two- to three-page typewritten rambling note left by Spengler did not reveal what set off the killer or provide a motive for the shootings, Pickering said. He called the attack a "clear ambush on first responders."

He declined to reveal the note's full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people."

Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler's sister died before or during the fire.

"It was a raging inferno in there," Pickering said.

A next-door neighbor said Spengler hated his sister and they lived on opposite sides of the house.

Roger Vercruysse said Spengler loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living with her son and daughter in the house in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters.

As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles.

They were immediately greeted by bullets from Spengler, who wore dark clothing. Volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, driving the truck, was killed by gunfire as the windshield before him was shattered. Also killed was Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as a 911 dispatcher.

Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who was passing by pulled his vehicle alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said.

The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.

"I could see the muzzle blasts comin' at me. ... I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down," the officer said.

At another point, he said: "I don't know if I hit him or not. He's by a tree. ... He was movin' eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots." Pickering portrayed him as a hero who saved many lives.

The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun ? high-powered ... semi or fully auto."

Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother's death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler ? a felon who wasn't allowed to possess weapons ? had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario.

That ended when he left his burning home Monday morning, armed with his three weapons and a lot of ammunition.

"I'm not sure we'll ever know what was going through his mind," Pickering said.

Secrecy over Mandela's health fuels concern

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

By Ron Allen, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG -- Nelson Mandela's life is an open book. Volumes chronicle every aspect of his 94 years. However, all that changed earlier this month when he was hospitalized.

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma and his spokesman have released several brief statements saying essentially that Mandela "continues recovering,? and that there?s ?no crisis.??The latest, issued Monday, said Mandela would spend Christmas Day in hospital, with Zuma asking "all freedom-loving people around the world to pray for him."

All this has done little to quell the widespread fear in South Africa and around the world that the end of the life of ?Madiba? -- as the beloved elder statesman is affectionately known here ? is near.

After more than two weeks of rumor, speculation and cryptic comments, very little is known for certain about how Mandela is really doing as he recovers from surgery to remove gallstones and treatment for a respiratory infection.

Country 'a bit nervous'
It?s been his longest hospital stay since everything changed in South Africa, when Mandela was released from prison and apartheid ended some two decades ago.

?For a man of his age, Mandela is not doing badly,? Tokyo Sexwale, the government?s minister of human affairs, said in an interview in the garden outside his home.

Sexwale, who has known and worked closely with Mandela since the 1970s, is also a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, or ?the center of his memory,? as Sexwale calls it.

From prisoner to liberator, Nelson Mandela's fight for equality in South Africa serves as a shining example of justice and peace. Here's a look at the pivotal moments in the life of South Africa's first black president.

'Who is my Mandela?' South Africans consider icon's place in a changing world

He said the Foundation receives anywhere from 6,000 to 7,000 messages of prayer, support and concern every week for Mandela.

?I hope, Godspeed, he?ll still be with us for quite some time. The country feels a bit nervous, it?s like a family losing the father,? he added.

He did not reveal specific details about Mandela?s condition or prognosis.

?You have to speak quite loudly to him,? observed Peter Paul Ngwenya, who told NBC News that he was last with Mandela a few weeks ago.

?He is very forgetful,? he said of the man he clearly idolizes. ?He does remember faces and he does remember names.?

Nelson Mandela undergoes surgery to remove gallstones

Former South African President Nelson Mandela is being treated for a recurring lung infection. South African authorities gave few details about his illness, but have now said the 94-year-old is responding well to treatment. NBC's Rohit Kachroo reports.

Sexwale and Ngwenya are former freedom fighters and political prisoners, a generation younger than Mandela.

Sexwale was sentenced in 1977 to 18 years on Robben Island for treason and terrorism.? He served 13 years, much of it while Mandela was there.

Trying to avoid 'death-watch circus'
Ngwenya was convicted of similar offenses in 1985 and sentenced to 15 years. History was kind to him and as apartheid crumbled he was released early in 1990.

The government has been notably brief about their hero's health.

Its line is that it must protect Mandela's privacy, dignity, and give his doctors the space they need to care for him.

?They really don?t want to turn this into a ghoulish, death-watch circus,? said Brooks Spector, a retired diplomat, academic, and NBC News consultant in South Africa.

Secretary of State Clinton tells of the important life lessons she has learned through her friendship with Nelson Mandela.

Killings of S. Africa farmers a toxic apartheid legacy

What's more, this is not a culture like in America, where doctors routinely hold daily press briefings about high profile cases.

?The government has never felt comfortable with the prying eyes of the media,? Spector said.

First the government said it was a visit for "routine tests."

Later, it was revealed he had a "respiratory infection."

Finally came the announcement about the surgery, all with little explanation, and no opportunity for the media to ask questions.

Since Mandela entered an unidentified hospital on Dec. 8 there has been something of a shell game. Is he at this or that hospital?

Is he heading home, or there already?? Maybe he's going to Qunu, his homeland in a remote part of the Eastern Cape. Mandela has said he wants to spend his final days there.

South Africa releases newly-minted bank notes showing the smiling face of former president Nelson Mandela. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

All about peace, reconciliation
For days the government would only say Mandela was in a hospital in Pretoria, the capital, without saying which one.

Professor Adam Habib, of the University of Johannesburg, said the problem was that ?the government tends not to be transparent and that breeds conspiracy theories.??

Habid said his sense of things was that ?Mandela is not on his deathbed.?

He said he did not think the government was lying about Mandela?s condition, but the entire situation should be handled in a ?more mature way.?

It doesn?t help that there?s growing and widespread criticism of the government and Zuma, who faces hundreds of corruption allegations.

And nearly 20 years after Mandela was elected president, it?s difficult to find anyone who truly believes the nation and its leaders have lived up to his dream and his ideals.

Meanwhile, South Africa hopes and prays for the best. When you ask someone here about Mandela, there?s often a pause before an answer. It?s a brief difficult moment when many perhaps allow themselves to contemplate the inevitable.?

Reflecting on the last time he saw the quite frail Mandela a few weeks ago, Ngwenya said he was ?sad to see him like that, but I was happy that he?s still around, because it?s like to have a parent who brought you up, and now you?re looking after them.?

?It is good that your grandchildren and your children can still see this icon,? he added.

Sexwale noted, ?We draw strength not from the fact that Mandela is in the declining part of his years, but from the youth of his ideas. That?s what keeps this country alive.?

Those ideas, he said, were all about peace and reconciliation. ?I hope the memory of his ideas will be that which will drive not only our people here in South Africa, but all those who are inspired all over the world.?

UN helicopter shot down in South Sudan; 4 dead

(AP) ? South Sudan's armed forces shot down a U.N. helicopter on Friday and all four crew on board died, the United Nations said.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the helicopter from the U.N. mission in South Sudan was on a reconnaissance mission when it was shot down.

"In subsequent communications between the mission and the South Sudanese Armed Forces, the SPLA told the mission that it has shot down the helicopter in the Likuangole area in Jonglei state," he said. The SPLA is South Sudan's army.

Del Buey added, "initial reports indicate that the U.N. helicopter crashed and burned."

The U.N. mission immediately launched a search mission, and "it has confirmed the death of all four crew members," he said.

The mission is investigating, del Buey said.

Earlier, the mission had said the Russian-built Mi-8 helicopter was not carrying any passengers.

Responsible Short Term Payday Loans for Christmas | Your Family ...

Editor: It is the opinion of Your Family Finances, that payday loans should be avoided at all costs. This article, however, does give some perspective and shows what is being done in the UK to make them more responsible.?

Payday loans have been getting a lot of media coverage lately and the latest report suggests that nearly 500,000 adults will be taking out a payday loan this Christmas, in London alone!

"Writing Cheque" by -Marcus-The research by R3, who represent lawyers and accountants that specialize in advice on insolvency, showed as much as 23% of adults in the London area will take out a payday loan within the next six months.? This is actually nearly double the rate shown for the rest of the UK.

There are a number of questions and conclusions that need to be made based on the estimate derived from the survey of nearly 1,000 adults by R3.

  1. How representative of the general London or UK population was the sample used by R3?
  2. Was the question correctly defined to focus on payday loans or did it cover all types of borrowing?
  3. Which age and population group did R3 include in the survey?

There are a few important issues being raised by the diverse media coverage of the short term payday loan sector.? The main news has been the ?caps? being placed on payday loan interest rates and charges/fees by including a number of amendments to the Financial Services Bill that is getting its third hearing in the House of Lords.? This is mainly good news for the sector, but a number of the top payday loan lenders have spoken of the possibility that the rogue lenders being targeted by the changes will actually move offshore thus escaping the legislation.? The other problem with the recent intense media coverage has been the misinformation that has propagated in the mainstream media about payday loans.? Others even suggest that the online media reports have attempted to ?piggy back? on the payday loan ?success? story as a means of cheap SEO for their online papers or news channels.

Most of the short term payday lenders covered by Gimmedosh use strict criteria when accepting applications online or in the high street.? The most important controls they use are confirming the borrower?s age, residency, employment status and UK bank account.? Some even perform a credit check on the borrower.? So, this should indicate that some of the media reports about payday loans and how they get ?vulnerable? people into further debt should in fact be directed at the ?loan shark? end of the high cost high risk short term lending sector, who tend to be door step operators with very sharp practices for lending at very high interest rates and suspect collection methods and penalty charges.? The main payday loan companies are responsible in their lending and have had many repeat customers who don?t want to use the mainstream finance providers like the big banks or credit card companies.

It is true that many people will have to borrow to make ends meet at this time of the year, but this isn?t anything new, as borrowings on credit cards, overdrafts and unsecured loans have always risen sharply after Christmas and the New Year holidays.? The payday loan sector has slowly taken an increasing share of the mainstream unsecured loans market, as more people have come to enjoy the benefits of short term lending with a hassle free and fast application processing.

This guest post is written by Andy Horton of Gimmedosh.com.? I have a background in IT as a business analyst and project manager primarily in financial organizations. I am interested in personal finance and the effects of payday loans on individuals and families.

Religion News: Chinese cult members arrested for Doomsday rumors

Week in Religion

According to CNN and Xinhua news agency, members of a group known as the "Almighty God" cult have been arrested in China in the provinces of Qinghai and Fujian. ?Almost 100 members of the group, which requires members to surrender all property when joining, were taken into custody for disseminating information about what they believe is the impending December 21 apocalypse. ?

Members of the cult went door-to-door and made announcements in public areas that the Mayan prophecy was true, the sun would not shine and electricity would not work on Dec. 21 and that only they could save people's lives. Chinese police also seized banners, books, discs and printing presses from the group.?

Dec. 21, 2012 is the last day on the Mayan calendar, spanning over 5,000 years and called the "Great Cycle." ?There are many theories about the reason this is the last day listed, from it being the end of the world to the beginning of a new cycle to no significance at all.

Survey Says

According to Gallup, the number of Americans who have "a great deal or quite a lot" of confidence in "the church or organized religion" is at an all time low at 44%, with Protestant Christians expressing more confidence than Catholics. This has been consistent for 2002 through 2012, and is believed to have started in reaction to the priest abuse scandals and cover-ups in the Catholic church in 2002.

Good Book?

Readers of all ages have followed and cherished Anne Lamott?s funny and perceptive writing about her own faith through decades of trial and error. And in her new book, "Help, Thanks, Wow," she has coalesced everything she knows about prayer to these fundamentals.

It is these three prayers ? asking for assistance from a higher power, appreciating what we have that is good, and feeling awe at the world around us ? that can get us through the day and can show us the way forward. In "Help, Thanks, Wow," Lamott recounts how she came to these insights, explains what they mean to her and how they have helped, and explores how others have embraced these same ideas.

Insightful and honest as only Anne Lamott can be, "Help, Thanks, Wow" is the everyday faith book that new Lamott readers will love and longtime Lamott fans will treasure."

Deutsche Telekom CEO Ren? Obermann leaving by the end of 2013, CFO to take over

Deutsche Telekom CEO Ren Obermann to leave by the end of 2013, CFO to take over

Not every CEO makes a graceful exit -- just ask HP. It's clear that Deutsche Telekom chief René Obermann would rather leave on his own terms, as he's orchestrating his departure up to a year before it takes place. The 16-year veteran expects to leave the company before the end of 2013, and the company has already lined up CFO Timotheus Höttges as the replacement at the start of 2014. Obermann says he's leaving to get closer to on-the-ground operations than possible while he's leading a telecom giant. Whether or not that's the full story, he likely won't mind leaving some of DT's uncertainties behind him, including the fallout from the blocked T-Mobile merger with AT&T as well as the long-term fates of both EE's rollout and the MetroPCS acquisition. When the company's Supervisory Board chairman says he wishes Obermann would stay, however, there's little doubting that this CEO transition is happening on friendlier terms than we've known in recent memory.

Windows Phone 7.8 for the Nokia Lumia 510, 800 starts lurking on NaviFirm

Windows Phone 78 for the Lumia 510, 800 starts lurking on NaviFirm

The appearance of new Nokia firmware on NaviFirm is already enough to pique the interest of owners jonesing for an update, and this time there's especially strong reasons to get fired up: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades for both the Lumia 510 and 800 have appeared on the servers. While their presence doesn't represent an official rollout, it supports notions that Nokia is edging closer to a deployment and gives those who live dangerously a chance to try 7.8 for themselves. We can't guarantee that phones will survive any unofficial transplants, but we'd love to hear from risk-takers who find something truly new in Microsoft's not-quite-8 release.

Iraq: 8 killed in separate attacks in Baghdad

(AP) ? Iraqi officials say separate attacks in Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad have killed eight civilians and wounded 24.

A police officer says three parked car bombs exploded simultaneously in separate areas in the northwestern neighborhood of Shula early morning Tuesday, killing six people and injuring 14 others.

Another police officer said two mortar rounds landed in the capital's northern Chikok district, killing two people and wounding 10.

Two health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Although violence has ebbed since the heights of the insurgency, Baghdad's Shiite areas remain favorite targets for Sunni extremists who seek to ignite nationwide sectarian conflict.

Odorant shape and vibration likely lead to olfaction satisfaction

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A new study of the sense of smell lends support to a controversial theory of olfaction: Our noses can distinguish both the shape and the vibrational characteristics of odorant molecules.

The study, in the journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, demonstrates the feasibility of the theory -- first proposed decades ago -- that the vibration of an odorant molecule's chemical bonds -- the wagging, stretching and rocking of the links between atoms -- contributes to our ability to distinguish one smelly thing from another.

"The theory goes that when the right odorant binds to its receptor, the odorant's molecular vibration allows electrons to transfer from one part of the receptor to another," said University of Illinois physics and Beckman Institute professor Klaus Schulten, who conducted the analysis with postdoctoral researcher Ilia Solov'yov and graduate student Po-Yao Chang. "This electron transfer appears to fine-tune the signal the receptor receives."

Many who study olfaction maintain that odorant receptors recognize only an odorant's shape and surface characteristics. They dismiss the idea that molecular vibration has anything to do with it, Schulten said. Likewise, some proponents of the vibrational theory think that molecular vibration only, and not shape, guides the sense of smell. Schulten and his colleagues belong to a "third camp" that sees evidence for both, he said.

The vibrational theory of olfaction is supported by studies showing that insects, humans and other animals can tell the difference between two versions of the same odorant molecule -- a normal one and an identical one with deuterium atoms substituted for each of the hydrogens. The deuterated and normal versions of the odorant have the same shape and surface characteristics, and yet humans and other animals can smell the difference, Schulten said.

"The question then is of course, for scientists, how does this happen?" he said.

To answer this question, Schulten turned to the work of a former colleague at Illinois, Rudolph Marcus, a chemist (now at the California Institute of Technology) who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992 for his insights into electron transfer, one of the most basic forms of a chemical reaction.

"Marcus realized that when electrons are being exchanged between molecules the process is coupled to the vibrations of the molecules involved," Schulten said. Marcus focused primarily on the low-frequency "rumblings" that occur as a result of molecular vibration in large molecules, Schulten said.

Odorant molecules are generally quite small, however, with a lot of high-frequency, high-energy vibrations, Schulten said. Some scientists have theorized that these high-frequency vibrations can, when an odorant binds to the right receptor, enhance the likelihood that an electron will transfer from one part of the receptor to another, sending an electrical signal that contributes to the detection of that odor.

Prior to the new study, no one had analyzed the energetics of the system to see if the vibrations of the odorant molecules -- in the context of all the background vibrations that are part of the system -- could actually promote electron transfer within the receptor. Schulten and his colleagues are the first to conduct such an analysis, he said.

"You can actually carry out quantum chemical calculations that determine very precisely the vibration of the molecule as well as the ability to couple it to electron transfer," Schulten said. The calculations indicate that such an interaction is energetically feasible, he said.

Odorant receptors are embedded in membranes and so are more difficult to study than other proteins. But previous research indicates that some receptors are metalloproteins, and "the metals in the proteins are predesigned to transfer electrons," Schulten said. "We also see that there are other amino acid side groups that can accept an electron, so the electron can be transferred through the protein."

Like others before them, Schulten and his colleagues suggest that the odorant receptor contains both an electron donor and an electron acceptor, but that electron transfer occurs only when a specific odorant is bound to the receptor. The new calculations offer the first quantitative evidence that the odorant can in fact promote electron transfer.

Those who suggested that molecular vibration played a role in odorant recognition in previous studies "didn't know about Marcus' theory and they didn't do quantum chemical calculations," Schulten said. "They argued very much on principle (that it was possible). So we are saying now, yes, it is really possible even when you do the most complete and reliable calculations."

Sony announces a slimmer PlayStation 3, launching this fall in black and white

A few years ago, Sony pulled the curtain back on a slimmed-down version of its PlayStation 3, and yet another Japan-only version since then. Today at the company's pre-Tokyo Game Show press event, the latest rumored redesign to the PS3 was announced. The new duo gets even smaller in stature and will arrive in stores with both black and white offerings, available in 250GB and 500GB models. The "charcoal black" one is given a September 25th launch date for the 250GB bundle (with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Game of the Year Edition) and a $269.99 price tag, while the "classic white" model arrives on November 22 (at least in Japan -- this is a TGS presser after all). For those looking for more storage space, the 500GB, charcoal-only option will be available on October 30th in conjunction with the Assassin's Creed III release -- no word on pricing just yet, though. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House introduced the new model, calling it 50 percent smaller than the original (rather large) PS3, and 25 percent smaller than the slimmed-down version.

Sean Buckley and Ben Gilbert contributed to this report.

Unique Challenges Organizations face When Creating a Strategic ...

Posted by Chris Frye in Uncategorized.
trackback

Any organization who has initiated a strategic planning discussion, or better yet, implemented a strategic plan, has overcome a huge hurdle. In the not so distant past, it was not uncommon for strategic planning to be viewed as an activity reserved only for large for-profit organizations. Nevertheless, strategic planning has now developed into the rule, rather than the exception for all organizations including small businesses and non-profit entities.

The biggest financial challenge most organizations face when developing a strategic plan is honing in on the most important key performance indicators (KPI?s). Often, an organization will focus on too many key performance indicators, or ones that do not directly align with their overall mission and goals. This can make it difficult for the organization to focus its efforts, and the metrics requiring the most attention may be inadvertently neglected. Organizations should identify a small group of key financial metrics and set realistic goals, timeframes, and a system to monitor and measure the outcomes.

Another key fallacy of strategic planning is focusing only on the financial aspect of the organization. While an important part of the overall strategic plan, the financial picture is just one piece of the puzzle. Key performance indicators should also be established for the organization?s processes, customers, and its own employees. This could mean tracking the time it takes to process an application (process KPI), number of customers served per week (customer KPI), or training hours per employee (employee KPI). These metrics can be just as important as the financial indicators in determining whether an organization achieves its goals and effectively carries on its mission.

The key to developing an effective strategic plan is gathering input from all of the stakeholders involved. One group, whether it is management or the board of directors, should not dominate the discussions. Employees outside of management who play a key role in the day-to-day operations of the organization should be included in the discussion. Constituents, such as donors, customers, or students should have a chance to voice their opinion as well. A strategic planning retreat is a popular method of bringing together all of these groups in a single location to facilitate meaningful discussion.

Documenting a strategic plan on paper is a great start. Placing that plan into action is even better. Key metrics should be monitored, measured, and assigned to an individual who can be held accountable for the result. Strategic planning is not a ?one and done? activity. It is an ongoing process that should be constantly changing and evolving to meet the new challenges that arise over time. It can be beneficial for the organization to align itself with a trusted advisor (CPA, banker, etc.) who can help the organization monitor critical strategic activities and serve as a sounding board for ideas and concerns the organization develops.

Strategic Planning Checkpoints
1. Elicit feedback from all stakeholders involved.
2. Establish the most important key performance indicators to focus on. Don?t limit yourself to financial indicators. Keep in mind your customers and employees.
3. Set realistic goals and timelines for meeting the goals.
4. Monitor progress and hold individuals accountable.
5. Update your strategic plan to accommodate changes over time.

95% The Queen of Versailles

Meet the Siegels, the subjects of a Sundance-winning documentary, The Queen of Versailles. David is a real estate magnate in his 60s. Jackie is his 40-something wife, a former model, and together they have eight children. It would be an understatement to call the Siegels rich. These people are stupid rich. These are people that have so much money they don't know what to do with it, which is why David and Jackie set out to build the biggest home in the nation. After the subprime mortgage flameout of 2008, the Siegels took a major hit in their resources. But not everyone sees worldwide economic disaster as a wake-up call. Some just keep on shopping. The Queen of Versailles is one captivating clinical study in overreaching. In the wake of the financial collapse, politicians were eager to lambaste the poor who bought mortgages they couldn't afford (the better to shield blame from their friends in the banking cabal). Let this film show you that even the super rich can have trouble living within their (enormous) means. I won't lie; part of the appeal of this documentary is the continual shock of the wasteful extravagance the Siegel clan called normal. How opulent was their lifestyle? Well their 26,000-square foot home only had 17 bathrooms, so you can see why the Siegels would feel the need to build the biggest home in the nation. This 90,000-square foot fortress was modeled after the actual French palace in Versailles, so you know, it's going to be modest. It was designed to have 30 bathrooms, 10 kitchens, a bowling alley, an ice-skating rink, and two movie theaters (for counter programming?). The large stain glass window itself cost $250,000. The total cost of the project: more or less $100 million. I repeatedly laughed to myself in disbelief at the untamed lavishness on display. I confess it's hard for me to put myself into this vapid mindset. I just see all hat money and think of all the better things it could have been spent on. How many children could be vaccinated with $100 million? How many people could have been bought out of slavery with that money? How many low-income students could have afforded college? The kicker, what really gets my ire, is that is was all unnecessary. The Siegel family already lived in a giant mansion. Did they have to live in a giant-er mansion? When is enough just enough?By the end of the movie you won't know whether to scorn the Siegels or feel sorry for them. I'm at a loss myself. There's a certain level of schadenfreude watching a riches-to-rags story, watching the wealthiest among us find their world of easy money come crumbling down. But then you start thinking what these people are going to do now without the luxury of wealth. The Siegel children are horrified when at one point dad declares they will likely have to go to college and, gasp, earn their own living. And if these kids have to fend for themselves, it doesn't take a genius to get a sense of what the future holds. At one point, the adopted niece discovers her pet lizard is dead. Jackie harangues her about not taking care of it. "No one takes me to the pet store!" the niece declares. "But why didn't you at least give him water?" Jackie reasonably asks. The niece responds dead-serious: "That wouldn't have made a difference." And these people are going to have to fend for themselves! The horror that waits. The entire family has been wrapped up in a cocoon of wealth, insulated from the real world, and now has no real sense of how to navigate this new, blunt reality. Adding to the sadness is the dawning realization that David Siegel cannot stand his wife. Jackie is wife number three, and a former pageant winner/model, so we all know what stood out to the older businessman. Even his kids know. Late in the film, when the weight of creditors bears down on him, David sequesters himself in his private room, shows no interest in his wife or his children, and confides to his dog that the two of them could just run away together. With the comforts of wealth stripped away, and Jackie reaching, gasp, middle age, it becomes readily apparent that David's waning affection is not going to reverse. But the movie belongs to Jackie, the titular queen, and she is easily the most fascinating figure in the film. It's easy to dismiss the bleach-blonde woman with huge fake breasts and a shiny, fake life of glamor. Is she a ditz? She got a degree in computer engineering. Impressive. Is she a gold digger? She cannot help herself when it comes to buying, whether it's at Southerby's or Wal-Mart. Is she even a good mother? She does admit that she would not have had nearly as many children if it weren't for the ever-present nannies. What I saw was a woman who knew she could taste the good life and then became afraid of being kicked to the curb. David is happy to fund her personal projects and let her splurge on posh buys, but for how long? Her body, impressive though top-heavy, is aging, and her model looks are naturally fading into a comfortable middle age. Such is life. However, you can tell that Jackie is terrified. Mountains of money acted like a buffer between her and her husband. That's gone now. He keeps joking that when Jackie gets old he's going to dump her for two twenty-year-olds. Even when the family is downsizing, Jackie makes sure to fit in her beauty stops (botox, tanning, etc.). Some might charge the woman with being toxicly narcissistic, but I think that's too simple. Her looks are her meal ticket and now they are betraying her. She knows the type of man she married, and they both seem to be failing to live up to expectations. Now that the shiny distractions are removed, they have to live with one another as-is, and as-is doesn't really work for men of wealth and ego.Director Lauren Greenfield (Thin) spent three years documenting the Siegel clan. She must have done something right with her finished product since David Siegel filed a lawsuit against the movie and Greenfield. The suit argues the film damages David Siegel's credibility by positing that his company is on the verge of financial ruin. His company, Westgate Resorts, sold timeshares in the same kind of high-pressure sales tactics that lead to people buying things they cannot afford. After the 2008 meltdown, guess what? People couldn't afford their own homes let alone a vacation timeshare. When the bankers freeze the easy money, Siegel and his company cannot pay their bills and have to downsize, sell offices, and foreclose major properties, including their signature Vegas resort. It's hard to imagine that Greenfield went out of her way to portray a gloomy outlook on Siegel's company when the facts are pretty black and white. He lost his access to money and lost assets he couldn't afford any longer. The litigation just seems like desperate spin against the obvious and insurmountable. From a documentary standpoint, not all of the storylines and messages stick together. You can tell Greenfield wants to use the Siegel clan as an allegory for the American consumerist culture. See, the movie says, even the rich overreached too. But beyond the audience feeling superior to such careless individuals, I don't think this works. The movie never fails to be fascinating but almost in a car-crash sort of manner, as we vicariously lavish in the pornography of riches. Certainly Greenfield never condones the lifestyles of her subjects, not like the insipid, soul-deadening, vain Real Housewives reality franchise on Bravo (in a surprise to nobody, Bravo has snapped up the broadcast TV rights to Versailles). There's plenty of derisive laughter to be had throughout, but you do wish that Greenfield had pushed further. Comparing the Siegel's lives to their live-in nannies seems to be given superficial significance. These immigrant women bust their asses raising the Siegel brood and one of them literally lives in one of the kid's super sized dollhouses. She literally lives in a former dollhouse. Choke on that metaphor. Then there's a limo driver who's had to cut back to make ends meet, but really the stars of the film are Jackie and David. Too often the film seems caught up in the "look how disgustingly rich they are" direction. This is a compelling documentary, to be sure, but it can lapse into an extended Lifestyles of the Super Rich and Famous. David Siegel makes a very resonant observation in the film. "Everyone wants to be rich," he says. "If they can't be rich, they want to feel rich." Of course David Siegel's company made a hefty profit from making people feel rich at their resorts. Everyone wanted to partake in the same illusion, the same false belief that the good times were never going to end. The Queen of Versailles is alarming, fascinating, and beyond belief at several points (why do these people keep getting more pets they won't care for?). You'll feel a general sense of moral superiority but that's the movie's weakness as well. The super rich are characterized as extravagantly wasteful, and while this is a notion that will not break any headlines, the movie too often dips into schadenfreude that doesn't elevate the material. We're left with the sinking impression that this clan is stuck in their ways and ultimately doomed. Since the film's release, David Siegel has reclaimed his foreclosed super mansion, and now he's brought the asking price down to a more reasonable $65 million. It seems that you can lose millions and still not gain a lick of sense and perspective. Nate's Grade: B
