Let's send either Lea Michele or Dianna Agron home a winner, shall we?

Neither of these Glee stars picked up any SAG Awards last night, and their show as also shut-out, but that doesn't mean both actresses didn't look beautiful and that one of them can't come out on top in this Fashion Face-Off.

Thousands greet veterans at St. Louis parade (Reuters)

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) ? Thousands of people lined the streets of downtown St. Louis on Saturday cheering on marchers in a parade honoring veterans of America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the nation's first major welcome to soldiers since the end of the Iraq War.

Crowds of parade-goers stretched a mile through the center of the city on a crisp winter's day, many waving American flags, with the metallic Gateway Arch glistening in the background in an event reminiscent of parades following World War One and World War Two.

"I'm just loving it," said Staff Sergeant Chris Green, 35, who volunteered for the Missouri National Guard two months after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington and was part of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

"When I heard this was happening I was choked up to say the least," Green said. "With the president cutting back (on the military), for Missouri to pull this together despite everything is just outstanding, absolutely outstanding."

While the invasion of Iraq quickly toppled Saddam Hussein, the country descended into sectarian violence and an occupation that dragged on for nearly nine years before the last U.S. forces pulled out in December.

For President Barack Obama, the military pullout fulfilled an election promise to bring troops home from a conflict he inherited from his predecessor that evolved into the most unpopular U.S. war since Vietnam.

There have been no major pomp-and-circumstance homecoming events for the returning veterans save for scattered small events since the last U.S. troops left Iraq, including a speech by Obama at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, thanking veterans for their service.

Some have been hesitant to hold parades while troops remain in Afghanistan.

OUTPOURING OF VOLUNTEERS

Saturday's parade was organized through social media by a coalition of veteran groups, private citizens and local officials.

"We got an outpouring of volunteers who wanted to do something for all the vets," organizer Chris Kuban said.

St. Louis police did not provide a crowd estimate, but the streets appeared crowded with thousands of marchers and spectators.

Thousands of marchers participated in the parade itself, which had 93 floats, 500 motorcycles, veterans from the most recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the 1991 invasion of Iraq, and Vietnam, as well as family members, high school bands and the hometown Budweiser Clydesdales.

Along the parade route, the crowd clapped and cheered, standing eight or more deep in spots, shouting "Welcome home," "Thank you" and "We love you."

About 4,500 U.S. troops were killed in Iraq, and the occupation was marred by the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the killing of civilians by troops or private security contractors.

Thousands of Iraqi troops also died in the war as did thousands of Iraqi security forces in the chaotic years following the invasion, along with more than 100,000 civilians.

Many of the spectators on Saturday were Vietnam vets, including James Beaumont, 61, of St. Louis, who said he would have liked to have had a parade when he returned home.

"A parade would have been nice but right now I'm a Vietnam vet who needs a job," he said. "The VA ( U.S. Veterans Administration) is no good and I'm living with my damn uncle until I can get on Social Security."

Richard Pfeifer, 62, of Ballwin, Missouri, said that while not a veteran, he wanted to show his appreciation of the Iraq War vets.

"I'm very proud of what we have accomplished and I know how hard it was for the Vietnam vets," he said.

The ceremonies began Friday night at the Soldiers' Memorial near the Gateway Arch. There, volunteers read through the cold night the names of more than 6,000 U.S. service men and women killed in the wars since the September 11 attacks.

Supporters of the Iraq invasion cited in part a threat that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. But none were recovered, leading to increasing criticism of the war.

Gunmen attack police station in Nigeria's Kano (Reuters)

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Gunmen bombed a police station on Sunday outside Nigeria's second city Kano, the police and witnesses said, leading to an hour of gunbattles in a region plagued by attacks from Islamist sect Boko Haram.

Kano state and its capital city of 10 million people have been under siege by gunmen from Boko Haram, which wants to impose sharia law across Nigeria.

"We were able to push them out of the area but they burnt part of the police station," Kano police commissioner Ibrahim Idris said. "It was a blast that caused damage to the station."

Boko Haram's attacks have become more sophisticated and deadly in Africa's top oil producer. A series of gun and bomb attacks, mostly on police stations, killed 186 people in Kano on January 20.

Witnesses said gunmen and armed police were in a shoot out for around an hour after the explosion at the police station at Naibawa district outside Kano.

"We are scared. The police and Boko Haram members are battling each other and there is gunfire everywhere," Usman Ibrahim Bello, a local resident told Reuters.

In an audio tape posted on the Internet on Thursday, the purported leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, threatened to kill more security personnel and kidnap their families, and accused U.S. President Barack Obama of waging war on Islam.

Boko Haram, a movement loosely modelled on the Afghan Taliban whose name translates as "Western education is sinful," has been behind almost daily killings in its home base in the largely Muslim northeast. Its violence has spread west into other parts of the north and the capital Abuja since last year.

Notion Ink explains OMAP over Tegra decision for the Adam II

While which chip ends up in a particular device will significantly affect its performance and access to future upgrades, it's not often that we get to peek behind the curtain and find out why those decisions were made. A post on Notion Ink's new Adam II development blog adds some transparency to the process, discussing the switch from an NVIDIA Tegra chip in its first Adam slate to a TI OMAP solution in the just announced tablet. According to the blog, while theoretical performance marks are nice, the company decided its expertise and that of available programmers would let it squeeze the most out of a Texas Instruments chip, as opposed to its first effort that didn't "fully utilize" the power of Tegra. Hit the source link for more details and a breakdown of some of the tech packed into the OMAP4 CPU, and keep an eye on the blog for more details in the run up to the Adam II's release.

Notion Ink explains OMAP over Tegra decision for the Adam II originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 29 Jan 2012 19:16:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Jobs told Google to stop poaching workers: filing (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Apple's Steve Jobs directly asked former Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt in 2007 to stop trying to recruit an Apple engineer, according to a court filing.

The email from Jobs to Schmidt was disclosed on Friday in the course of civil litigation against Apple, Google and five other tech companies. The proposed class action, brought by five software engineers, accuses the companies of conspiring to keep employee compensation low by eliminating competition for skilled labor.

In 2010, Google, Apple, Adobe Systems, Intel, Intuit Inc and Walt Disney Co's Pixar unit agreed to a settlement of a Justice Department probe that bars them from agreeing to refrain from poaching each other's employees.

According to an unredacted court filing made public in the civil litigation on Friday, the now-deceased Jobs emailed Schmidt in March, 2007, about an attempt by a Google employee to recruit an Apple engineer. Schmidt was also an Apple board member at the time.

"I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this," Jobs wrote.

Schmidt forwarded Job's email onto other, undisclosed recipients. "Can you get this stopped and let me know why this is happening?" Schmidt wrote.

Google's staffing director responded that the employee who contacted the Apple engineer "will be terminated within the hour."

He added: "Please extend my apologies as appropriate to Steve Jobs."

Representatives for Apple and Google could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.

In a court hearing this week, a U.S. judge said that the civil lawsuit against the companies will proceed, although it may be split up into multiple potential class actions.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is In Re: High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation, 11-cv-2509.

Viacom CEO Dauman's pay drops to $43M in 2011

(AP) ? Viacom Inc.'s Philippe Dauman led the list of America's top-paid CEOs in 2010 but his pay package for 2011 was nearly halved, mainly because he didn't get stock bonuses for renewing his contract as he did a year ago.

Still, an Associated Press tally values Dauman's pay package at $43 million, down from $84.5 million a year ago.

The figures were contained in a securities filing the media company filed Friday.

Another reason he won't be the highest paid CEO last year: Apple Inc.'s Tim Cook was awarded a package valued at a whopping $378 million for replacing the late Steve Jobs at the helm.

Dauman's base salary rose 33 percent to $3.5 million, but the bulk of his pay came in the form of a $20 million bonus for good performance, a 78 percent increase from a year ago. The company said operating profits came in above the mid-point of its target range and free cash flow generation was near the top of its range.

Dauman's annual grant of stock awards was 68 percent smaller than a year ago at $13.3 million, and new stock options he was granted were valued at $6 million, down 79 percent from fiscal 2010.

He also received other compensation of $262,636, mainly for personal use of the company aircraft.

New York-based Viacom's executive chairman and 88-year-old founder, Sumner Redstone, saw a 39 percent boost to his pay package to $21 million.

Redstone, who controls the company through a special class of voting shares, pulled down a base salary of $1.75 million, up a third from a year earlier, and a performance bonus up 78 percent at $10 million. New grants of stock and stock options came to about $8 million, the same as the previous year.

Redstone also benefited from a preferential executive pension plan that grew by about $1 million, with other compensation totaling $30,955.

Over the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, Viacom's widely traded Class B shares rose 7 percent to $38.74 from $36.19. The company said its total shareholder return in fiscal 2011, comprised of $417 million in dividends and $2.5 billion in share buybacks, was 8.7 percent, compared to 0.8 percent for the companies of the S&P 500 Index.

Viacom owns pay TV networks such as MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 and the Paramount Pictures movie studio.

The Associated Press formula calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits. That makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2011 was the present value of what the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. However, the number is just an estimate, and what an executive ultimately receives will depend on the performance of the company's stock in the years after the awards are granted. Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a specified amount of time to receive shares or exercise options

911 call from Demi Moore's home to be released (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Authorities are set to release a 911 call made from Demi Moore's home earlier this week.

The Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/x6Lu2n) says the Los Angeles city attorney's office has recommended that certain portions of the call be deleted to comply with federal privacy laws.

City attorney's office spokesman Frank Mateljan tells the Times that the office has reviewed the tape and has made certain recommendations.

A spokeswoman for Moore said Tuesday that the actress is seeking professional help to treat her exhaustion and improve her health. Publicist Carrie Gordon says the decision is due to the stresses in Moore's life, and she looks forward to getting well.

Moore announced in November that she had decided to end her marriage to Ashton Kutcher following news of alleged infidelity.

Mars-Bound Probe Serves As Radiation Guinea Pig

So when it wound up with a parachute I thought, "Ahh, Lazarus was exaggerating, this ain't so bad."

Then it deployed a rocket lander and I thought, "Oh, maybe he's right."

Then it popped the rover out on a Mars yo-yo, and I said, "Oh, come on!"

Then it gently releases the rover and goes shooting off over the horizon and I just started chuckling.

If this thing works, NASA rules.

US women must beat Costa Rica?for Olympic berth

The United States women's national team may be Hope-less in a winner-take-all qualification match for the 2012 Olympic Games against Costa Rica on Friday night.

But, even without Hope, you can still bet the Barnhart on the U.S. women punching their ticket to London.

All puns aside, the U.S. women could take the pitch against Costa Rica in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification tournament without Hope Solo in tow as their star goalkeeper nurses a quad injury that she aggravated against Mexico on Tuesday night after originally sustaining the injury during her much-ballyhooed stint on "Dancing With the Stars." If she can't go, longtime backup Nicole Barnhart, who filled in an injured Solo during much of the team's World Cup qualifying campaign, will be pressed into duty for the first time in the tournament.

Either way, Solo's sore leg should be nary a concern for the U.S. against a Costa Rican team that has not only never beaten the U.S., but never scored a goal against them. The U.S. holds a 34-0 scoring edge over Las Ticas in seven matchups.

Naysayers and worriers may be having flashbacks to November 2010, when, with Solo out following shoulder surgery and Barnhart in goal, the U.S. suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat in the semifinals of World Cup qualifying to a Mexican team that, at the time, had also never beaten their American rivals. El Tri, however, demonstrated an ability to hang with and seriously challenge the U.S. in matches prior to their World Cup qualifying clash.

Costa Rica -- defensively overwhelmed in a 5-1 loss to Christine Sinclair and Canada on Monday night -- has never done that, and it seems unlikely they will do so on Friday night against a very in-form U.S. squad that has yet to surrender a goal in Olympic qualification while outscoring opponents 31-0 in three matches. Thanks to some stellar play from the backline and aggressive challenges by holding midfielders Shannon Boxx and Carli Lloyd, Solo has hardly been called upon to do anything, making a total of just three saves.

Las Ticas simply lack the skill and fitness necessary to pose a true challenge to the Americans. Only the would-be biggest upset in U.S. women's soccer history can stand between the U.S. and an Olympic berth.

So, with or without Hope, the U.S. women can start packing their bags for London.

A few more things to keep an eye on Friday night:

If she plays, will Barnhart be rusty?
Barnhart has started a grand total of one match over the past five months, a 1-1 draw with Sweden on Nov. 19. So it stands to reason that there may be a few cobwebs to shake out. But, Barnhart got plenty of reps in the team's November camp while Solo was competing on "Dancing With the Stars." It's unlikely that she'll have any significant problems being ready.

Who will replace Ali Krieger?
Heather Mitts got the nod to replace Krieger following her knee injury against the Dominican Republic, and started again in her place at right back against Guatemala. But against Mexico, Pia Sundhage elected to slide normal first-choice center back Rachel Buehler out wide, with Becky Sauerbrunn taking Buehler's place in the middle next to captain Christie Rampone. While perhaps not as smooth on her runs and crosses from out wide as Krieger or Mitts, Buehler gave an absolutely dogged defensive effort, stymying the speedy Monica Ocampo in her attempts to attack from the left wing. Plus, Heather O'Reilly has been so dominant on the right wing that the U.S. can likely afford to sacrifice a bit of offensive production at right back. Look for Buehler to be back on the outside again.

Will Sydney Leroux continue to play ahead of Alex Morgan?
Morgan was the breakout star of the 2011 World Cup, but the 21-year-old Leroux has been the breakout star of this tournament with her five-goal performance in the second half against Guatamela. Morgan has struggled for playing time in Sundhage's new 4-2-3-1 formation, with Abby Wambach serving as the lone striker. So, it was interesting - perhaps surprising - to see Leroux, not Morgan, get the call to line up next to Wambach when Sundhage switched to a 4-4-2 formation to begin the second half against Mexico. Keep an eye on who the first striker off the substitutes bench is Friday night. If it's Leroux again, it will be a strong sign that she's played her way into prime position to make the London roster.

A visual feast of our source of light and life

The center of our Solar System is a star, just one of billions of stars. As seen with the naked eye, it appears as a static and quiet yellow disk in the sky. However, it is in fact stormy and variable and contributes much more than only light and heat.

Over the next few years more solar storms will occur as the Sun approaches maximum activity in 2013. Solar storms and space weather affect our technology-based infrastructure, including satellites, GPS navigation, radio communication and power grids, all of which are vulnerable to space weather effects.

In the image-filled book, Our Explosive Sun A Visual Feast of Our Source of Light and Life, Pl Brekke provides a detailed introduction to the dynamics of the Sun and how it affects Earth, both scientifically and culturally. The book examines the many ways that the Sun impacts our world, including the beautiful northern and southern lights, and how greatly the Sun affects our technology-based society.

Our Explosive Sun includes over 200 color illustrations and photos of the Sun, several of which were made especially for the book and have never been published before. Additional material, available via Springer Extras, includes a large number of animations and video material. A PowerPoint presentation of the book is a useful resource for teachers.

Commenting on the book, Dr. Bernhard Fleck, ESA Project Scientist for the SOHO mission, said, "I find it to be the most beautiful and informative popular science book dedicated to our star: spectacular imagery, interspersed with clear and very informative graphics and illustrations, all presented in a very clean, fresh and modern design. Stunning! 5 out of 5 stars!"

About the Author:

Pl Brekke is a Norwegian solar physicist with a doctorate from the University of Oslo in astrophysics and is now a senior advisor for the Norwegian Space Centre. He has worked with state-of-the-art space-based solar telescopes since 1985 and has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, 70 proceeding papers, and more than 30 popular science articles. He was the ESA Deputy Project Scientist for the SOHO spacecraft. Exile leader says killing of Tibetans unacceptable (AP)

DHARMSALA, India ? The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile says the killing of Tibetan protesters in China is unacceptable.

Lobsang Sangay is calling for a worldwide vigil by Tibetans and their supporters next month to press the Chinese government to resolve the crisis in Tibet through dialogue.

At least two Tibetans were killed and several more were wounded when security forces opened fire on a crowd of protesters in southwestern China earlier this week.

Sangay said in a statement Thursday that Tibetans in China are denied their basic human rights and the region is under undeclared martial law.

Over the past year, 16 Buddhist monks, nuns and other Tibetans have set themselves on fire in protests against Chinese rule.

(AP) ? Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's new talk show will be broadcast on RT, the Kremlin-funded English-language television station said Wednesday.

Wikileaks had said in a statement Monday that Assange's show would begin airing in March, but there was no word on who would air it or how it would be produced.

RT television stepped forward Wednesday to say it will be broadcasting the show, a series of 10 interviews with what it described as "key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries ? figures who in the author's opinion will be shaping the political agenda of tomorrow."

The names of the guests are still to be disclosed.

The RT statement said Assange is filming the series from the location of his house arrest in Britain. He is currently fighting extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted on sex crimes allegations. United States officials are weighing possible charges linked to the leaks, the biggest disclosures of secret documents in U.S. history.

RT, which also broadcasts in Spanish and Arabic on its cable networks, often takes a critical stance on U.S. policy.

"We're proud to host Julian Assange's new project," editor in chief Margarita Simonyan said in the statement. "RT has rallied a global audience of open-minded people who don't take things around them for granted."

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614

We've seen several laptops lately that peg the intersection of the desktop replacement and budget categories at around $700. The Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 is a bit steeper at $779.99 list, but don't dismiss it: For one thing, we've seen online resellers offering it for around $750. For another, the 15.6-inch Aspire is loaded with everything from Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) to a discrete Nvidia graphics adapter that actually passed our gaming tests at medium resolution and detail settings.

As you might guess from its model number, the Acer 5830TG-6614 is a refreshed version of the Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 ($799.99 direct, 3.5 stars) we tested in August. Besides a $20 price cut and the addition of WiDi 2.0?which beams the notebook's display to an HDTV equipped with an extra-cost ($100 or so) Belkin, D-Link, or Netgear adapter?the changes include slightly faster graphics and processing hardware.

Design
Unchanged from August is the Aspire's handsome cobalt blue aluminum lid with chrome Acer logo and matching blue plastic palm rest; the black chiclet-style keys are framed in a silver aluminum keyboard surround. There's a numeric keypad, with small but dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys, to the right of the primary keys; the touchpad is centered under the latter (actually, under the space bar), so some users perceive it as being too far to the left. I had no complaints myself?I quite enjoyed typing on the laptop, and the touchpad, though a little small compared to some of the jumbo ones you see today, worked smoothly, with comfortable left and right buttons instead of invisible clickpad corners.

Measuring 1.2 by 14.9 by 9.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.4 pounds, the 5830TG-6614 has an appealingly angular design. The 15.6-inch widescreen has the same 1,366-by-768 resolution that's ubiquitous in the class?if you want more space, you'll have to either pay for the likes of the Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct, 4 stars) or opt for a 17.3-inch system such as the HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx ($699.99 list, 4 stars). Sufficient for viewing videos in 720p, the display offers a glossy finish and fairly narrow viewing angles. The laptop's audio is a good partner for those videos, with above-average sound from the Dolby Home Theater speakers mounted above the keyboard.

Features
WiMAX or other mobile broadband is absent, but otherwise the TimelineX has a full complement of wireless features: Besides WiDi, there's 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's also Clear.fi, a proprietary streaming technology that lets Acer products (such as the Aspire and an Iconia tablet) share multimedia content over a home Wi-Fi network.

On the Aspire's right side are three USB 2.0 ports and a dual-layer DVD?RW drive, with an SD/MMC/xD/MS Pro memory card slot on the front edge. Ethernet, microphone, and headphone jacks are on the left side, as are VGA and HDMI ports and one USB 3.0 port. The last can be used to charge a cell phone or other device; a handy utility lets you specify whether to allow USB charging only when the laptop is plugged in or discontinue it when the latter's battery sinks to a certain percentage.

The Acer's 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive is smaller than the 750GB drives found in competitors like the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570-10249ZU ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars), but still offers plenty of room for your documents and multimedia files. It's also packed with more than its share of bloatware, from a slew of house-brand utilities to usual suspects like Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and a 60-day trial of McAfee Internet Security to New York Times and Nook e-readers and Netflix and eBay links. Acer backs the Aspire with a two-year mail- or carry-in parts-and-labor warranty and one-year international travelers' warranty offering access to service centers abroad for owners who carry a copy of the original sales receipt.

Performance
Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 The 5830TG-6614 is built around Intel's 2.4GHz Core i5-2430M, the same dual-core, four-thread processor found in our Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6 and numerous competitors, with 6GB of DDR3 memory. It's not surprising, then, that many of its benchmark scores are virtual ties with those laptops'. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,388, for instance, is well within the margin of error of the 2,376 of the Lenovo Z570-10249ZU, and its Photoshop CS5 time of 4 minutes 8 seconds is just six seconds behind that of the Asus U56E-BBL6 and HP dv7-6b55dx.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614

The Aspire strides to the front, however, in graphics tests, thanks to its 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 540M discrete graphics adapter. Running at 1,024-by-768 resolution with medium quality and detail settings, the Acer posted a playable 39.1 frames per second (fps) in Lost Planet 2 and a better-than-playable 58.1fps in Crysis, as well as nearing the impressive 10,000-point mark (9,551) in 3DMark06.

Nvidia's Optimus technology automatically switches from the GeForce adapter to the Core i5 chip's more placid integrated graphics when running visually undemanding applications, which boosts battery life. Indeed, though I'm by nature biased against batteries sealed inside laptop cases so they can't be swapped out, it's hard to criticize the Acer's too much, because it lasted a hardy 9 hours 1 minute in our MobileMark 2007 test?trailing its 5830TG-6402 predecessor (9:57) and the HP Pavilion (9:33), but besting the Asus (7:42) and Lenovo (5:30).

Overall, the Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 comes within a whisker of unseating the Asus U56E-BBL6 as our budget laptop Editors' Choice, the latter clinging to its title by dint of its lower price and removable battery. But if you're looking for an affordable desktop replacement that won't fold when you fire up a few games, the Acer is a strong candidate.

(AP) ? Seven foreigners have been kidnapped in Pakistan in the last six months, four in January alone, highlighting the security threat in the country and hampering aid efforts.

Islamist militants, separatist rebels or regular criminals are suspected in the abductions, with motives ranging from ransom, publicity or concessions from the U.S. or Pakistani governments such as prisoner releases or a halt to army operations

Development workers who have been helping victims of flooding or those affected by military campaigns against militants in the northwest close to Afghanistan have been the primary targets, although two Swiss tourists also have been seized.

Large ransoms have reportedly been paid in the past to secure the freedom of foreign and Pakistani hostages, while the kidnappers have killed others.

On Jan. 5, armed men kidnapped a British man working for the Red Cross in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan, which is home to separatist insurgents and Islamic militants. City police say they believe he is no longer in the city, but otherwise have no information about who is holding him.

Last year, a pair of Swiss tourists were seized in the same province. The man and woman appeared in a video released by their captors, the Pakistani Taliban, who they said had threatened to kill them.

Gunmen bundled two European aid workers ? one Italian and one German ? into a car in the Pakistani city of Multan in central Punjab province last week. A Kenyan, also working for an international group, disappeared Monday as he drove from the city of Sukkur, in Sindh province.

All three men were working on relief projects following floods in 2010 and 2011 that destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of homes in Sindh and Punjab provinces, triggering a major international aid effort. While many projects have wound up, others are continuing, employing Pakistanis and foreigners.

In one of the highest-profile cases, a 70-year-old American humanitarian aid worker was kidnapped from his house in the Punjabi city of Lahore in August.

Al-Qaida claimed to be holding the man, Warren Weinstein, and said in a video he would be released if the United States stopped airstrikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. Unusually, the video did not contain footage, photos or any other evidence that Weinstein was alive or even in al-Qaida's custody.

Pakistan has been plagued by militant violence since 2007, and international agencies were already operating under severe security restrictions.

Pakistani employees, who make up the vast majority of international agencies staff, have also been frequently targeted for abduction.

"We are concerned for the people who have been kidnapped and the ability of NGOs to carry out the work," said Aine Fay, chairman of the Pakistan Humanitarian Forum, which represents 42 international aid groups in the country. "There are people in need out there. It's people on the ground that suffer."

As well as threats from militants, humanitarian workers have complained about harassment from Pakistani intelligence agencies in the wake of the unilateral American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011. The CIA ran a vaccination campaign in the town where bin Laden was living ahead of the raid to try and get information about him.

The army was infuriated by the raid and whipped up already strong anti-Western sentiment in the country. It continues to subject foreigners in the country to intense scrutiny, the implication being that they maybe spies.

One development worker, who declined to be identified because he didn't want to draw unnecessary attention his employer in the media, said his colleagues had been told to keep a much lower profile but faced no extra restrictions.

"Everyone is a keeping close eye on it. The big question is whether this is banditry or something more sinister," he said, referring to concerns that foreigners maybe targeted by criminal gangs, then "sold on" to militants.

Steven Tyler Sings Painful National Anthem At AFC Championship Game (Video)

OMG did you see Steve Tyler sing the national anthem at the AFC Championship game today? If not then you missed a horrendous rendition of the infamous song. Seriously it was god-awful and I have the video to prove it. As I sat here anxiously awaiting the AFC Championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots I got the oh so not great pleasure of listening to Tyler belt out the national anthem. To say he was bad is an understatement, it literally hurt my ears listening to him sing or attempt to sing I should day. When Steven was first announced I thought he was kind of a rather odd choice but then I was told he was a Patriots fan, not sure if that is true or not but it is what I was told. Anyway I just so happened to not be paying attention to the TV when the performance began but boy did I quickly tune in as soon as I herd his voice because it was painful. I honestly can?t describe to you how bad it was, al I can say is it sucked. I understand that Tyler is not as on [...]

DiVincenzo campaign finance reports missing expenditure info ...

Democratic Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo will amend several campaign finance reports filed with the state in the past four years in order to include itemized details of thousands of dollars charged to a campaign credit card.

Several reports filed during his 2010 run for office as well as reports filed in advance of the 2014 primary do not itemize nearly $175,000 in credit card charges, in violation of state campaign finance laws.

According to the law, any charges reimbursed to either a campaign credit card or one in the candidate's name must be reported, including the amount of the charge, the date and the vendor.

The credit card charges were the subject of a request for investigation filed by former county candidate Marilyn English, who in August told the Election Law Enforcement Commission she believed the credit card purchases to be ?excessive expenses.?

In response to inquiries from PolitickerNJ, DiVincenzo said through his attorney that while he believes his reports were properly filed, he will amend all relative filings in the interest of transparency.

"We have not been served with any ELEC Complaint against the DiVincenzo Committee and to our understanding none has been initiated,? said Attorney Angelo Genova in a statement.??We believe that all DiVincenzo Committee reports were properly and timely filed with ELEC.?These reports disclose the information asked for in the actual ELEC reporting forms.?

Genova went on to say that ELEC?s campaign filing reports do not provide space for itemizing receipts.

?These reports disclose the information asked for in the actual ELEC reporting forms,? he said. ?To those that say more specific information was required to be reported about personal credit card reimbursements, I say that if that were so, ELECs reporting form would ask for that information and it doesn't. And if ELECs own regulations are to be read to require more specifics,?why doesn't the ELEC form ask for those specifics? It doesn't.?

In the statement, Genova stressed that none of the money spent by DiVincenzo came from public funds.

"Joseph DiVincenzo reports his use of his campaign funds .......Funds which? this Committee believes have been expended for legally permissible purposes and funds and expenditures which involve not one cent in public taxpayer dollars," genova said.

Between January 2008 and October 2011, DiVincenzo?s campaign paid at least 47 checks to two credit cards totaling nearly $175,000.? That total includes nearly $20,000 paid to the cards in October.? DiVincenzo filed 22 reports during that period excluding amendments to existing reports.

The payments range from $240, to $9,185 and were generally accompanied by only generic descriptions of the purchase such as ?food/travel.?? In some instances, the description says only ?reimbursement to candidate for campaign expenses.?

During that period, DiVincenzo has raised more than $2 million and as of his last filed report in October, retains $942,000 on hand.

While the ELEC filing form does not contain separate space for itemizing credit card charges, many campaigns create a separate attachment to show the purchase details.

(AP) ? The New York Giants have their own Super Bowl formula: in overtime and on the road.

And with Lawrence Tynes' foot.

Five plays after the 49ers' Kyle Williams fumbled a punt, Tynes kicked a game-winning 31-yard field goal in overtime, sending the Giants to the Super Bowl with a 20-17 victory over San Francisco in the NFC championship game on Sunday.

In another tight one in this decades-old postseason rivalry, both defenses made key stops before New York capitalized on a rare mistake in San Francisco's resurgent season. Williams' blunder put the Giants in perfect position for another sensational finish in a season full of them.

"That was a tough game. We had to fight for every yard that we got," Giants quarterback Eli Manning said. "Defense was outstanding, special teams getting us two turnovers was huge. That led to 10 points."

The first three overtime series ended in punts before Williams fumbled. The Giants won it moments later and silenced ? for good this time ? the towel-waving, poncho-wearing sellout crowd at cold, rainy Candlestick Park.

"It was one of those situations where I tried to turn it upfield and it just didn't work out," Williams said.

Manning and the Giants (12-7) will face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis as 3?-point underdogs. The last time the teams met for the NFL title, 2008, the Giants ended the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.

Tynes had a hand, er, foot in getting the Giants to that one, too, kicking the game-winning field goal in overtime.

Devin Thomas put the Giants in position this time by recovering his second fumble of the game after Jacquian Williams stripped the ball from fill-in return man Kyle Williams, who also fumbled earlier to set up a New York touchdown.

"It's my second NFC championship game, my second game-winner," Tynes said of his kick 7:54 into overtime. "It's amazing. I had dreams about this last night. It was from 42, not 31, but I was so nervous today before the game just anticipating this kind of game. I'm usually pretty cool, but there was something about tonight where I knew I was going to have to make a kick. Hats off to Eli, offense, defense. Great win."

Holder Steve Weatherford celebrated with a slip-and-slide on his back down the soggy field. Victor Cruz fell to his knees. Tynes quickly found his crying wife for a warm hug. Manning tossed his gloves into the temporary seats with a big smile, then received a surprise visit from big brother, Peyton, in the locker room.

Manning went 32 of 58 for 316 yards and two touchdowns and overcame six sacks in his record fifth road playoff win, New York's fifth in a row overall.

Manning threw a go-ahead 17-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham with 8:34 remaining after Kyle Williams fumbled for the first time.

The Giants challenged that the ball touched Williams' right knee and Thomas recovered with 11:06 left and coach Tom Coughlin won, giving the Giants the ball back at the 29.

"That was a tremendous football game for those that really enjoy football at it's very basic element," said Coughlin, who matched former Cowboys coach Tom Landry for most road playoff wins with seven. "Just a classic football game that just seemed like no one was going to put themselves into position to win it. Fortunately we were able to do that."

A 12-point underdog in the 2008 title game, the Giants battered Brady and got a last-minute TD pass from Manning to Plaxico Burress to win their third Super Bowl. Five months ago, Manning declared he was in the same class as Tom Brady. Now, he'll get another chance to outdo him on the NFL's biggest stage.

During this playoff run, he's already outplayed Aaron Rodgers and the defending champion Packers, and fellow former No. 1 pick Alex Smith.

Cruz set the tone Sunday with eight of his 10 receptions in the first half and finished with 142 yards.

"It's just been a tremendous effort by all of us, man," Cruz said. "We understand that any one of us can get hot at any moment. As long as we're all on the same page and just playing together, man, we've got a great group of guys."

The Giants appeared on the verge of collapsing and Coughlin's job status in jeopardy just a month ago, when they fell to 7-7 with an embarrassing loss to the Washington Redskins on Dec. 18.

They were facing elimination the following week against the Jets and Rex Ryan, but the Giants won 29-14. They followed with a 31-14 win over Dallas in the regular-season finale to win the NFC East and get to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

New York dominated Atlanta at home in the opening round, and then came another stunner: a 37-20 victory at Green Bay.

Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 73 and 28 yards for the NFC West champions (14-4), who went from 6-10 a year ago to a contender and ended an eight-year playoff drought.

"It will be a tough one. It will take a while to get over," Harbaugh said. "There were a lot of ways in which we played well enough to win. We just didn't come away with it."

Smith completed just 12 of 26 passes for 196 yards, connecting on only one short throw to a wide receiver. With no threats on the outside, San Francisco managed one third-down conversion, coming on the final play of regulation. The offense was unable to overcome Williams' blunders.

"We all know him. We know how committed he is to winning," Smith said. "It's not on him. I look at the 1-for-13 on third downs. I know he's going to feel bad, but he's still part of our team. We didn't lose the game there. We lost it across the board offensively. We just couldn't get it done."

The only other time these two franchises faced off in the conference championship the game finished in memorable fashion. On Jan. 20, 1991, Roger Craig fumbled with the 49ers leading 13-12 late in the fourth quarter and the Giants went on to win 15-13 to deny San Francisco a chance at a third straight Super Bowl title. New York then beat the Bills to capture its second Super Bowl.

This time, it was Williams who made the crucial mistake.

'You hate to be the last guy that had the ball, to give it away in that fashion and to lose a game of this magnitude," Williams said. "It is what it is. We're going to move forward as a team. Everyone has come to pat me on the back and the shoulder to say it's not me."

Notes: Davis joined Jerry Rice as the only 49ers with at least two touchdowns receiving in back-to-back playoff games. ... Cruz caught a 36-yard pass from Manning on the first play of the second quarter, then Manning hit Bear Pascoe for a 6-yard touchdown seven plays later. ... Giants C David Baas beat his former team. ... Manningham missed the potential game-tying TD in a 27-20 loss here on Nov. 13.

Sentiment; In Loving Memory Of

Before I actually begin here, I guess I should give you a little background. My mum passed away in 2010, and I've been living alone since then. Just recently today, I found something that belonged to her in one of my old moving boxes. It was a binder containing tons of poems she wrote when she was my age. The dates vary from 1983 to 1993 (Most are written by hand, some were typed on a typewriter). Now, this was a relatively big find for me because I never really had anything of sentimental value to remember her by. And now I do. But here's the good part, I'll be sharing it all with you.

That's right. Every poem will be read, and then transferred to text right here for everybody to see. Comment if you'd like.

And so, without further ado, I present to you...

Sentiment; In Loving Memory Of
A project by Abraxas. 1/22/12 -

The Stained Glass Window

If I was standing in front of a stained glass window,
And the glass was warped, so what's on the outside wouldn't show.
You could stand on the other side and see through.
And you'd see me, but I'd never see you.

You could see my tears and wonder why.
But you'd never know my laughter, or hear me cry.
I'd never know you were watching my tears.
So I wouldn't be able to tell you my fears.

I could pound on the glass and know it wouldn't break.
Because not knowing if you were there would be more than I could take.
But you'd only have to step forward, and you could break through.
It'd be the only way I'd ever really be able to see you.

But I can't ask you.
I don't know if you're there.
If you are, please step through.
And show that you care.

[Notes: This first poem was written on a small sheet of paper, torn out of what appears to be a diary. The page is tattered, and is dated 8/4/92. It is addressed to the name 'Justin'. It is signed 'Kay Sharbono', an alias I never knew of.]

Weight Watchers For Small Business: Silver Lining Helps You Set Financial Goals (And Actually Meet Them)

Screen shot 2012-01-22 at 5.08.20 PMOwning a small business is tough. Carissa Reiniger has been working in small business development for over seven years and says she's seen countless entrepreneurs and small business owners run into what she calls the "cash flow catch 22": If I had more money, I could make more time -- and vice versa. What's more, the large majority of startups and small businesses that fail, she believes, don't hit the deadpool because their ideas were terrible, but instead because their owners' health declined, or their spouses were fed up with them working 80 hours a week, or they didn't have the stamina or resources to push on. That's why Carissa founded Silver Lining -- to help small business owners make enough money so that they can keep doing what they love. To help jack up the success rates of SMBs, she and her team created "The Slap", or the Silver Lining Action PLan.

Santorum says he's pressing on to Florida (AP)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Vowing to go forward, Republican Rick Santorum cast his disappointing third-place finish in this state's primary as a hiccup and pledged Saturday to continue campaigning in a race he called "wide open."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich claimed the top spot in this state's first-in-the-South primary and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney claimed second. Undeterred, Santorum did not acknowledge the deficits he faces ? chiefly money and momentum ? and insisted he would press forward with a campaign that increasingly looked to be on its last legs.

"Let me assure you we will go to Florida and we will go to Arizona," he said before supporters interrupted him with cheers of "We pick Rick."

"I ask you: it's a wide-open race. Join the fight," he urged them at an election night rally at the Citadel.

Santorum eked out a narrow win in lead-off Iowa but lost in a blow-out to Mitt Romney in New Hampshire. Santorum had cast South Carolina as a place where he could start a well-financed, traditional campaign, yet he came up well short to Gingrich.

"Three states. Three different winners. What a great country," Santorum said.

For months, Santorum has cast himself as the candidate who can best compare his record with President Barack Obama and pitched himself as the most consistent conservative in the race. The former Pennsylvania senator urged Republicans to stand up for social conservative values and promised to continue his campaign with that unapologetic and, at times, aggressive message.

"This campaign was not going to be about tearing everybody down. It was going to be about negative ads," he said. "It was not going to be about anything other than painting a bold vision for our country. One that believed in the working class values that my grandfather taught to me."

The disadvantages that plagued Santorum early on ? lack of money, shell operations, negligible advertising ? gave way to a more professional campaign here. He had the money to air ads, hire staff and cover as much ground as possible with a private airplane. Many of his senior advisers had deep roots to the state and in recent days he beamed confidently that South Carolina could give him his second win in an early state.

That win didn't come Saturday and his advisers were shuffling to reset the campaign yet again, this time in costly Florida. His aides planned for him to greet voters near Fort Lauderdale on Sunday and then prepare for two debates in the coming week.

But Florida is a costly state where the campaigns are fought on television ads, not diners and storefronts that were the center of Santorum's strategy to this point. The sheer size of Florida is a challenge for candidates to navigate, although Santorum's tentative plans call for him to focus on just one media market a day.

Santorum's outside allies seemed poised to bankroll supportive ads ? at least for now.

"The longer we can keep his candidacy going, the more people can see his qualities," said Foster Friess, a Wyoming businessman and a major contributor to the Red, White and Blue Fund, an outside "super" political committee supporting Santorum. "If you look at Republicans, they always run these old war horses. Santorum is different."
