From the article: 'Doctors had first removed one leg from the patient after his heart and vascular system failed to sustain the limb and then the other leg and two arms. "The science council (of the hospital) decided to remove the organs one by one due to additional metabolic complications in the following process," the hospital said in a statement. "Our patient is now in the intensive care unit. The critical process is still continuing," it added.'"

Madison Church Offers Grant Money To Tackle Homelessness

A Madison church has offered a $130,000 grant to help tackle the issue of homelessness.

"Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ has been a? part of the southwest Madison community for over 50 years," said Rev. Winton Boyd. "Many of our members are residents of these neighborhoods and this effort builds on our long-term commitment as a congregation to serving those in need whenever possible."

The congregation will also create?a Southwest Housing Partnership that will address homelessness issues in several southwest Madison neighborhoods..

Its office will be based on Russet Road in the Joining Forces for Families office.??

Orioles owner sues Facebook

BALTIMORE?? Two Baltimore law firms have filed a lawsuit against Facebook, arguing that the site has violated privacy laws.

The Daily Record of Baltimore reports the law offices of William Murphy Jr. and Peter Angelos filed their lawsuit in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif. The lawsuit, which also involves a California firm, claims Facebook has used online tracking technology to monitor users even when they are not on Facebook's site.

The two named plaintiffs in the case are Laura Maguire of Charlotte, N.C., and Baltimore resident Christopher Simon.

California-based Facebook said in a statement Wednesday that it believes the case is without merit.

Lawsuits by users of large Internet services over privacy and other grievances are fairly common and typically seek class-action status.

Europe will vote to keep Canadian tar sands out

BAD year for Canada's tar sands. The US rejected the Keystone XL pipeline that would have carried fuel south, and now the European Union is poised to label tar bitumen more polluting than other forms of oil. That would rule out selling it to Europe.

The EU's Fuel Quality Directive will cut the greenhouse gas emissions generated by transport fuel - from production to use - by 6 per cent by the end of 2020. Suppliers will have to label fuels according to their total greenhouse-gas footprint, and current footprints will have to shrink.

The emissions from extracting and processing tar sands are larger than for regular oil (Environmental Research Letters, DOI: 10.1088/ 1748-9326/4/1/ 014005). The EU proposes labelling them as producing 22 per cent more emissions overall than conventional oil. Its fuel quality commission will vote on that proposal on 23 February, before the European Parliament makes the final decision.

Tar sands are dirty, but there's not enough to cause a climate calamity, says Neil Swart at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Canada has the largest reserve of economically viable tar sands - 170 billion barrels - and burning it all would raise global temperatures by just 0.03 ?C (Nature Climate Change, DOI: 10.1038/nclimate1421).

Regardless, "any means countries can take to wean themselves off fossil fuels should be encouraged", says Swart. He supports the EU plan.

Man United's cash reserves fall

LONDON - Manchester United's cash reserves fell by 100 million pounds ($158 million) in six months partially to finance an investment in a roster failing to maintain the English champions' dominance.

As a result of spending that also took in stadium improvements and a bond repurchase program, the Old Trafford bank balance dropped from 150.6 million pounds to 50.9 million pounds ($238 million to $80 million) to Dec. 31, the club's quarterly accounts revealed on Tuesday.

Despite net spending of 48 million pounds ($76 million) on new players, including goalkeeper David de Gea, defender Phil Jones and winger Ashley Young, United failed to advance past the first round of the Champions League and has been eliminated from both domestic cups. Meanwhile, neighbor Manchester City holds two-point lead in the Premier League.

United spent 5.3 million pounds ($8.4 million) in the three months ending Dec. 31 buying back bonds that were issued two years ago to raise 504 million pounds (then $762 million) to replace long-term financing and reduce debts to hedge funds.

United has spent 92.8 million pounds ($147 million) repurchasing that debt ? more than the 80 million pounds (then $130 million) received from Real Madrid in 2009 for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The club's debt, resulting from the 2005 takeover by the American Glazer family, stood at 439 million pounds ($694 million) at the end of 2011 and incurred almost 24.5 million pounds ($39 million) in interest payments in six months.

Although the debt was down from the 508 million pounds at the end of 2010 it rose again in the final three months of 2011 by 6 million pounds ($9.5 million).

However, United's moneymaking abilities appear to be undiminished, with 175 million pounds ($277 million) in revenue in the six months ending Dec. 31 ? up more than 10 percent on the same period a year earlier due largely to a rise in TV income and a new training jersey sponsorship deal with express delivery and freight firm DHL.

"Revenues continue to grow strongly although costs are increasing just as quickly so pretty much negating that growth," the Manchester United Supporters' Trust said in a statement. "However the key figures of interest to supporters show the Glazers have now spent every penny of the money received from the sale of Ronaldo, and more.

"That's now 92.8 million pounds spent on buying back their own bond debt that they loaded onto our club."

MUST said that since Ronaldo's departure, net transfers totaled 90 million pounds ($142 million) while 225 million pounds ($356 million) had been taken out of the club to cover debt payments and interest.

"What could the club have done with that extra 225 million pounds? Cheaper tickets for loyal fans, investing massively in the squad and stadium, developing and retaining the best youth players, competing on an equal basis with the very best teams in Europe," MUST said. "This is the true cost to Manchester United of the Glazers' ownership."

Man takes 8-year sentence in Woodland crash that killed Duluth ...

A former Duluth man who drove drunk on Woodland Avenue and crashed into another vehicle resulting in the death of a grandmother and critical injuries to her 13-year-old grandson pleaded guilty Thursday to two crimes and agreed to serve a longer-than-guideline prison sentence.

Hawk Patrick Edwards, 19, who had been living and working in the Williston, N.D., area, pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide resulting in the death of Paula Bergren, 65, and pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular operation causing great bodily harm to her grandson, Edward Everett Bergren.

In St. Louis County District Court on Thursday morning, Edwards admitted that he was driving drunk and made no excuses for the accident that he caused. ?I know that I did do it, but I don?t know exactly what happened,? he told the court.

Edwards agreed to serve a four-year prison sentence for each of the two crimes, for a total of 8 years, as part of a plea agreement reached between St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin, Edwards and his public defender, Fred Friedman.

?I want to take the 48-48 (months),? Edwards told the court. ?It was my fault. ? I was drunk.?

Edwards will be eligible to have his prison time reduced if the critically injured boy achieves a substantial recovery. That recovery includes achieving ?full use of all of his faculties and limbs,? Rubin told the court.

Judge Shaun Floerke will make the decision on whether the sentence is reduced based on medical reports that will be submitted to him for review. Floerke told

Edwards: ?You?ll get ?fair? from me, but you won?t get ?mercy? from me.?

The court ordered an Arrowhead Regional Corrections probation officer to investigate Edwards? background before sentencing on March 30.

Under sentencing guidelines, Edwards faced a four-year sentence for the criminal vehicular homicide conviction and an 18-month stayed probationary sentence to be served at the same time for causing the injuries to the child.

However, Rubin filed a motion arguing that a longer-than-guideline sentence was justified. Outside the courtroom, after the hearing, Rubin said that he based his request on the fact that the ?injuries to the child were far greater than any other we?ve seen in any recent case, and the driving conduct showed an extreme disregard and indifference to life. Fortunately, Mr. Edwards has agreed to accept the upward durational and dispositional departure. I believe fairness in how a person is treated leads to justice, so we?re going to treat him fairly.?

Paula Bergren was a Woodland resident and well-known in Duluth recreational sports circles as former president of the Minnesota Recreation and Sports Federation and the Duluth Softball Players Association. She also was seen at local events selling subscriptions to the Duluth News Tribune and would have been expected at the boat show this week if she were alive.

She was driving her 1995 Ford Taurus southbound when a 2001 Ford F250 Super Duty pickup driven by Edwards crossed the center line and struck her vehicle on the 2900 block of Woodland Avenue on Jan. 19. She died from her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Rubin told the court that Edward Everett Bergren has made some progress in his recovery, but that his right side is still paralyzed and his left eye hasn?t opened and he may lose sight.

Edwards? first statement to police after the accident was: ?I just killed those people.?

An investigating Duluth police officer detected the odor of alcohol on Edwards. The defendant admitted to the officer that he had been drinking that morning. His eyes were bloodshot and watery. A preliminary breath test was administered. The result was a 0.11 percent blood-alcohol level. The legal limit to drive in Minnesota is 0.08 percent. After taking the test, Edwards said: ?I am going to jail. I deserve to for what I did.?

Curb the car dashboard technology, government asks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Auto dashboards are becoming an arcade of text messages, GPS images, phone calls and web surfing, the government says, and it's asking carmakers to curb those distractions when vehicles are moving.

Manufacturers have been loading up higher-end vehicles with an array of built-in gadgets in an effort to tempt car buyers who want to multi-task behind the wheel in today's increasingly connected society. But the technological advances have raised concerns that drivers' attention is being diverted too much from the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday proposed voluntary guidelines for manufacturers, including a recommendation that they design dashboards so that distracting devices are automatically disabled unless the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is in park.

"We recognize that vehicle manufacturers want to build vehicles that include the tools and conveniences expected by today's American drivers," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "The guidelines we're proposing would offer real-world guidance to automakers to help them develop electronic devices that provide features consumers want without disrupting a driver's attention or sacrificing safety."

Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said carmakers will review the guidelines, which have a 60-day comment period. She noted that the industry has had its own voluntary guidelines since 2002.

"Drivers are going to have conversations, listen to music and read maps while driving, and automakers are helping them do this more safely with integrated hands-free systems that help drivers focus on the road," Bergquist said.

The guidelines, which are directed at passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, would exempt safety devices such electronic-warning systems that alert drivers to potential collisions or lane changes. GPS and other navigation devices that provide directions would also be permitted while driving, but the safety administration is asking that the systems be designed so that drivers can't manually enter a destination unless the car is in park.

The alternative is for drivers to go back to studying maps while they drive, which is even less safe, Strickland said.

Bergquist, of the carmakers, cautioned about preventing addresses from being entered into GPS devices unless the vehicle is stopped.

"There are often passengers in the car who can enter addresses, so we need to consider that when looking at requiring these technologies to only be used in park," she said. "And if the GPS is disabled when moving, consumers can always bring their own Garmin into the vehicle. It's complicated."

Other dashboard technologies recommended for automatic disabling include text-messaging, Internet browsing, social media browsing, phone dialing and computer screen messages of 30 characters or more that are unrelated to driving.

The guidelines would make exceptions for these devices if they are designed only for use by passengers and can't be accessed or seen by the driver.

Manufacturers are also urged to take steps to make technologies safer that drivers are allowed to use while driving. That includes reducing to two seconds or less the amount of time drivers must divert their eyes from the road to use a device. Devices should also be designed so that drivers don't have to use more than one hand or glance through extraneous information.

The guidelines are a good first step toward reducing driver distractions, said Barbara Harsha, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state highway safety offices.

But "the safest thing is for drivers not to use these systems at all ? both hands on the wheel and the mind focused solely on driving," she said.

Anne Fleming, senior vice president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an industry-supported safety research group, said it's good that NHTSA and automakers are working together, but it "will be very hard to measure whether it's reducing distraction and whether it's reducing it enough."

One reason NHTSA decided to pursue voluntary guidelines instead of mandatory rules is that officials wanted to do something quickly, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters in a conference call. The process for writing federal rules often takes years to complete.

The guidelines are also a way "to continue the drumbeat" that distracted driving is a serious safety issue that costs lives, said LaHood, who has been vigorously campaigning on the subject for more than three years.

NHTSA is also considering future guidelines to address portable electronic devices drivers carry with them in cars, including GPS navigation systems, smartphones, and electronic tablets and pads.

In December, the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates accidents, said that texting, emailing or chatting on a cellphone while driving is simply too dangerous to be allowed and urged all states to impose total bans except for emergencies.

That recommendation was inspired by recent deadly crashes, including one in which a teenager sent or received 11 text messages in 11 minutes before an accident. There were an estimated 3,092 deaths in crashes affected by distractions in 2010.

Currently, 35 states and the District of Columbia ban texting while driving, and nine states and the District of Columbia bar hand-held cellphone use. Thirty states ban all cellphone use for beginning drivers. But enforcement is generally not a high priority, and no states ban the use of hands-free devices for all drivers.

Texting while driving increased 50 percent in 2010, the most recent year for which data is available, according to NHTSA. A government survey of drivers found that two out of 10 say they've sent messages from behind the wheel ? and that spikes much higher among young adults.

AAA said it's important to ensure that dashboard technologies aren't simply making it more convenient and more appealing to drive while distracted.

"Available research evidence is extremely limited and highly inconclusive on the real risks that in-car communications technologies pose to drivers, even when systems are limited to voice-activation only," said AAA CEO and President Robert L. Darbelnet. AAA has a study under way to address that question, he said.

In Carter?s opinion, his own numbers compare favorably to Largent?s. Carter questioned why he has been voted down five times while Largent was elected to the Hall of Fame the first year he was eligible.

?If Steve Largent had 130 touchdowns he would have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But he didn?t, he had 100 ? and he was still a first-ballot Hall of Famer,? Carter said.

On that score Carter?s case isn?t quite as strong: It?s true that Carter?s raw numbers are better than Largent?s, but Carter played in a more passing-friendly offensive environment. When Largent retired he owned the all-time NFL records for catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Carter never owned any of those records.

Irvin said in his discussion with Carter that he hopes Carter joins him in Canton, and Carter said he has appreciated hearing that from many Hall of Famers, even if the Hall of Fame voters don?t feel the same way.

Aurora Clark, an associate professor of chemistry at Washington State University, has adapted Google's PageRank software to create moleculaRnetworks, which scientists can use to determine molecular shapes and chemical reactions without the expense, logistics and occasional danger of lab experiments.

"What's most cool about this work is we can take technology from a totally separate realm of science, computer science, and apply it to understanding our natural world," says Clark.

Clark and colleagues from the University of Arizona discuss the software in a recent online article in The Journal of Computational Chemistry. Their work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences program.

The software focuses on hydrogen bonds in water, earth's most abundant solvent and a major player in most every biological process.

"From a biological or chemical standpoint, water is where it's at," says Clark.

In living things, water can perform key functions like helping proteins fold or organizing itself around the things it dissolves so molecules stay apart in a fluid state. But the processes are dazzlingly complex, changing in fractions of a second and in myriad possible forms.

Much like the trillion-plus Web domains on the Internet.

Google's PageRank software, developed by its founders at Stanford University, uses an algorithm?a set of mathematical formulas?to measure and prioritize the relevance of various Web pages to a user's search. Clark and her colleagues realized that the interactions between molecules are a lot like links between Web pages. Some links between some molecules will be stronger and more likely than others.

"So the same algorithm that is used to understand how Web pages are connected can be used to understand how molecules interact," says Clark.

The PageRank algorithm is particularly efficient because it can look at a massive amount of the Web at once. Similarly, it can quickly characterize the interactions of millions of molecules and help researchers predict how various chemicals will react with one another.

Ultimately, researchers can use the software to design drugs, investigate the roles of misfolded proteins in disease and analyze radioactive pollutants, Clark says.

"Computational chemistry is becoming the third leg in the stool of chemistry," the other two being experimental and analytical chemistry, says Clark. "You can call it the ultimate green chemistry. We don't produce any waste. No one gets exposed to anything harmful."

Clark, who uses Pacific Northwest National Laboratories supercomputers and a computer cluster on WSU's Pullman campus, specializes in the remediation and separation of radioactive materials. With computational chemistry and her Google-based software, she says, she "can learn about all those really nasty things without ever touching them."

Many veterans seek to maximize their home-purchasing power and buy as much home as they can comfortably afford. Unfortunately, conventional loans do not provide veterans with this kind of flexibility. This dilemma is easily corrected with VA loan rates. Traditionally, VA loan rates are half to one percentage point lower than conventional mortgage rates. Refinance an existing home loan to either reduce the interest rate or liquidate a portion of the home's equity. The monetary value of liquidated equity can be taken in cash or, in the case of a manufactured home, used to purchase a lot. It is important to note that the existing home financing need not be a VA-guaranteed loan. Contact a qualified lender for specific loan limits or cash-in-hand restrictions.

Make weatherization improvements or install a solar heating or cooling system.

Yahoo's talks to sell Asian assets unravel

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? As Yahoo tries to head in a new direction, the fate of the struggling Internet company's Asian holdings remains in limbo.

The negotiations to sell Yahoo's stakes in China's Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan abruptly broke off in a disagreement over the sales price and the best way to get the complex deal done, according to a person familiar with the matter. Another person familiar with talks said Yahoo had second thoughts after agreeing to the sales price in a 300-page proposal outlining the proposed deal in late December.

"It was the culmination of a lot of little items," one person said of the deal's collapse.

Both people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the negotiations are considered to be confidential, despite repeated leaks about the discussions during the past few months.

All Things D, a technology blog affiliated with The Wall Street Journal, reported earlier that the talks had unraveled.

It's the latest twist in the drama that has been swirling around Yahoo Inc. since it fired Carol Bartz as CEO five months ago.

Since the start of the year, Yahoo has hired former PayPal executive Scott Thompson as CEO and announced the departures of five board members, including Chairman Roy Bostock and company co-founder Jerry Yang. One of Yahoo's major shareholders, New York hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, outlined plans Tuesday to shake things up even more; he intends to wage a campaign to win a board seat for himself and three of his allies.

Thompson, Yahoo's fourth full-time CEO in less than five years, has pledged to engineer a turnaround that eluded his predecessors.

For now, though, investors are disillusioned with Yahoo's inability to close the deal on the Asian assets. The company's shares shed 76 cents, or 4.7 percent, to close at $15.36 ? below their price six weeks ago when Yahoo announced Thompson's hiring.

The Asian impasse comes as a surprise, given that Yahoo and the prospective buyers, Alibaba and Yahoo Japan shareholder Softbank Corp., all seemed motivated to seal a long-awaited deal. Yahoo was confident enough to dispatch negotiators to Hong Kong last week while Alibaba had been seeking financing to pay for its part, one person said.

But the sides couldn't agree on the value of Yahoo's holdings, which have been steadily rising in the past few years as Alibaba's electronic-commerce services prospered in China's rapidly growing Internet market. Analysts have also differed on how much Yahoo could fetch by selling its stakes, with estimates ranging from $11 billion to $18 billion.

To compound the challenges, the deal was arranged in a way that would have enabled Yahoo to avoid paying taxes. That proposal, according to both people who spoke to the AP, was structured a "cash-rich split-off" that would have resulted in Alibaba and Softbank contributing money and other assets into a special entity in exchange for Yahoo's stakes in the Asian companies. Yahoo then could have used the money generated from the Asian sale to placate its long-frustrated shareholders with a special dividend or other measures that might reverse a three-year slump in its net revenue.

The downturn has turned Yahoo's Asian stakes into the most valuable part of the company, even though its own operations still include websites boasting an audience of about 700 million people.

But Yahoo is having trouble attracting the advertisers who have been spending more money on the Internet in recent years, a trend that has been enriching online search leader Google Inc. and Facebook, the owner of the largest online social network.

Yahoo remains open to reviving the negotiations to sell its Asian assets at the right price, one of the people familiar with the matter said. That could include a new proposal that would taxable in the U.S., the other person said.

When Yahoo appeared reluctant to sell its Asian stakes late last year, investment firms Blackstone Group and Bain Capital considered teaming up with Alibaba and Softbank in a joint bid to buy Yahoo in its entirety, according to media reports that cited unnamed people. Yahoo also considered selling partial stakes of the company to other investment firms.

Bostock publicly acknowledged the different proposals that Yahoo had been considering last week when he announced he will be stepping down as the company's chairman. At that time, he stressed "we are not in a position at this time ... to provide assurance that any transaction will be achieved."
