Heat recovery ventilation adds fresh air to your home

Heat recovery ventilation, also known as HRV, is a system that is designed to improve air quality inside your home in an energy efficient manner. And, starting in 2013, all new homes will have to have an HRV system.

While improved insulation and weather stripping may make your home more energy efficient, they also make your home airtight and less well ventilated. However, your home requires a way to exchange the stale air in your home with fresh air from the outside and make your home healthier, cleaner and more comfortable.

Opening a window does provide ventilation but the heat and humidity in your home is lost in the winter and is gained in the summer, affecting the energy efficiency of your home. An HRV system uses a heat recovery ventilator to bring fresh air into your home and take the stale air out, improving climate control and, ultimately saving energy by reducing heating (and cooling) requirements.

The unit is installed right beside the furnace and is connected to the ductwork for homes using gas or oil for heating. For homes that use electric heat, an HRV system uses a direct-ducted system that distributes fresh air throughout the house through ducts in the bedrooms, living room, dining room, bathroom, basement and other rooms.

The exhaust and outdoor air streams pass through the HRV unit, with the heat from the exhaust air used to pre-heat the outdoor air stream. During the air-conditioning season, an HRV can reverse this heat-exchange process, removing some of the heat from the incoming air and transferring it to the outgoing air.

You can buy HRV units that are equipped with an automatic humidity sensor that increases the ventilation rate when needed ? for instance, when you use the shower. Exhaust air is normally collected from the kitchen and bathroom areas, where most moisture and odours are created and exchanges it for fresh air from outside.
