It?s 2024 and I?m sitting in the Sky Box seats at Yankee Stadium. It?s a beautiful day for baseball.
First up, #11, an unknown rookie from ?Upstate? New York.
?He?s a switch-hitter who really knows the game and hits anything thrown to him,? says the announcer.
My hands are sweaty, my minds racing while praying to the good Lord above,? ?Please let him get a hit, a single a double to the outfield, anything other than a strikeout.?
Bam!
?A rocket down the third baseline. That will be the first major league hit for the Yankees? rookie shortstop Dylan Lane,? says the announcer.
The camera man shines on me and his father as we jump up and down, signing a thumbs up to our boy standing proud on first base. Tears stream down my face as I remember his little league days.
13 years prior:
An email message from Groupon, Frozen Ropes Baseball Camp, in Albany, is offering a week for $89.
?Wow, that?s a really good deal for a week of camp from 9am-3pm. Fun, exercise and his favorite thing to do? baseball.
?Sold!?
I get the coupon and proceed to sign him up for four more weeks.
Normally, my son goes to the YMCA Day Camp because I know that he will have a fun, activity-filled day instead of sitting home with grandma in front of the T.V. (Summer is when most kids end up putting on some pounds from inactivity and a more relaxed eating regimen. Making sure that your kids have a healthy packed lunch for camp or food prepared ahead a time in the fridge is important to keeping them on track and ready for the start of school.)
The first week was great. He learned what we already new, he?s a skinny rocket. ?You?ve got some ballplayer on your hands,? says the Coach.
The next few weeks got even better. It was time to hit the ball fields. He loved walking into the big dugouts that were much nicer than any he?d been in before. As if it was baseball instinct, or from watching way too many baseball games and movies, he fixed his cup, spit and ran to warm-up with the rest of the little leaguers with big dreams.
Later that day, I come to pick him up and of course he?s still throwing with the kids.
?Mom, can we stay a while longer??
?Buddy, you?ve been throwing all day your arms going to fall off,? I said.
?No, I?m not tired. I can play forever. Derek Jeter never get?s tired.?
?Ok then, Mr. Jeter. I?ll put the stuff in the car and you keep throwing.?
?Here comes my four-seam fastball, watch this Mom. Coach taught me this one.?
?The ball snaps into the kids glove. Strike-three, your outta here,? he says.
?We can go now.?
The door shuts and we leave another day at the field.
?I had so so much fun today, Mom. Coach Q hit a homer over the fence and we got to go get it, Coach J couldn?t get me out in a game of pickle and they set up a slip-n-slide after lunch so my clothes are soaking wet.?
As I look back to turn towards home, he?s out with a smile on his face.
I can only wonder if he?s day-dreaming, the same dream I?ve had, of his rookie year in the big leagues.
What fun, activity-filled camps do your kiddos enjoy? Have you tried Frozen Ropes camps or facilities? What do you do with you kids to keep them activity and eating right during the summer?
