Friday Field Photo #144: Eocene Deltas in Utah

This week?s Friday Field Photo?shows Eocene (55-35 million years old) sedimentary rocks exposed on Raven Ridge in northeastern Utah (just south of Dinosaur National Monument, which are the mountains in the background).

The interbedded mudstone and sandstone is interpreted as the record of shorelines and deltas going back and forth along the edge of a large intermontane?lake that developed in this area. This photo is from 2003 or so and I only spent an afternoon there on a field trip, I?d love to go back. This perspective image from GoogleEarth shows the ridge of strata nicely ? if I remember, this spot is the gully in the center.

Happy Friday!
